Unhappy Oil Change Confusion?

My year old XL has just passed 2500 miles.......time for my first DIY Harley oil change...........looked in my handbook regarding this issue and am totally confused with the latter part of the printed info........the first bit Draining Oil Tank : loosen jubilee clip pull off hose/plug.....I understand that bit............the second bit...Removal of Oil Filter: no problem...I get that bit too..........but the third bit of info has me baffled.........Refilling Oil Tank: DETACH FRAME CLIP FROM FRAME TUBE Loosen clip and remove hose from frame clip etc etc.........frame clip??? Please explain! Does this mean that I have to pull off the drain tube AGAIN? And release a bit of oil (with air) then connect it back again? Any one out there with a recent Sporty who knows the drill........put me outa my misery! Cheers!

this may help

Bert's Sportster How Tos - How to change the oil

personally having read that site I would let the oil out first before taking the filter off as on my TC most the oil is drained when the filter comes off and I don't get a big surge of hot oil.

Re: Oil Change Confusion?

when you remove the filter there will still be some oil in it even though you have drained the oil, stuff a thin rag under the filter to soak it up and remember not to overfill, the level wants to be halfway between min and max when cold or you will get problems, after filling you do have to drain a small amount of oil to prevent an air blockage, hope that helps

Re: Oil Change Confusion?

What others have said. Remove the drain tube, remove the filter. Pour some oil into the filter, about 1/3 to 1/2 full . Lube the rubber ring. Replace filter. Replace the drain tube when fully drained. Refill with oil about 1/2 way up the dipstick, run the engine, check the oil light goes out. Check for leaks. Recheck the dipstick.
If you spill oil, cat litter is not bad for soaking it up.

Re: Oil Change Confusion?

Cut the end off a lemonade bottle and then the top half about half way down and slide the bottle under the oil filter you can then still undo the filter and catch any extra oil in the top half of the bottle with the lid on!
