Lower HeadStock Bearing Stuck

Hello All

I am just starting the rebuild of my 94 sportster..

I am replacing the headstock bearings BUT the lower one seems to be stuck solid..The roller bearings have come off and left the inner bearing bit stuck..How do I get it off

I'm trying to add a photo but i'm not sure how

Thanks for any help..

Tony

Re: Lower HeadStock Bearing Stuck

1. Join the club
2. Get the headstock bearing puller from the tool loan scheme.
3. Use tool to remove old bearing.
4. Return tool to loan scheme
5. Ride bike and think what a lovely club this it

OR

Take it to a workshop that has the tool and let them remove it for you. Probably cheaper to join the club though.

seriously though, iIf you are close to us and promise to join the club I'll pull the race off for nothing.

Use the proper tool, which you don't have. So either heat it and slide it off, run a weld around it and it will fall off, or use a chisel under the lip and knock it off. The interferance fit is only about .001", so it won't be hard to get it off using any off these methods.

Re: Lower HeadStock Bearing Stuck

A quick tried and tested method used by some Harley Techs at the dealers too and yes it does work. I have done it couple of times.

1 Very important, put on some thick leather gloves.

2 Use an oxy-acetylene torch, {Mapp gas etc or a blow lamp if that's all you have got those these will be far less affective} after breaking the roller cage off {as yours is} using a small nozzle heat quickly just the inner bearing ring all round to get it very hot but not sufficiently to heat the stem.

3 Turn the whole lot upside down and give the base of the yoke where the stem fits in a very sharp tap with a heavy mallet, i.e. a soft faced Nylon tipped Thor type is best and the inner bearing should move, if not fly off.

The trick is in the speed and the heating of the inner bearing race very quickly without getting the stem hot then blunt force shifts the expanded inner and that's why the oxy-acetylene is best.

Watch out the bearing will be very hot, thus the gloves!

PS Don't put the new bearing on dry!

Thanks for all the advice...

I am seriously thinking of joining this club but what do I get for my £52.75 joining fee as I am a person on a very tight budget (trying to rebuild my Harley myself Thinking that I might be saving myself some money).

Thanks Again

the tools available for hire to club members are one hell of a bargain in themselves, Tony. Plus you will get offers from fellow club members as you have just seen from Girlyglide....you will save hundreds if not thousands in workshop costs.

Re: Lower HeadStock Bearing Stuck

an alternative method to remove this is a (very) steady hand and a disc grinder

joining the club and using the proper tool is a far safer method will less potential pitfalls
