Primary Drive Oil?

I've just bought my first Harley a 2006 883 Custom Sporty. I was made aware when I bought it that it was weeping oil from the starter motor gasket. Could someone tell me - After the work is done and the primary cover is replaced, which oil goes back into the primary drive, (for want of a better explanation) Is it just normal Harley (engine) oil the same as in the Oil sack/bag?

Thanks in advance for any answers given

Re: Primary Drive Oil?

Hi, don't put engine oil in the transmission. You use Transmission and Primary chaincase lubricant, different stuff.
Should take 32 fluid ounces from empty.

Re: Primary Drive Oil?

As advised by Robbiemac I went to my local Harley Parts stockist and asked for Transmission and Primary Chaincase Lubricant - I was given RevTech Gear and Chaincase Lube for Sportsters. See image of bottle below;

Gear and Chaincase Lube for Sportsters

I am a bit concerned as to whether or not I have the correct stuff. I have just been reading that this product is specifically designed to be used in all XR and XL Sportster engines 71-03. My Sporty is a 2006 model.

Does anyone know if I've been given the right stuff of not.

Thanks

Re: Primary Drive Oil?

I think the MoCo recommends 75w-90 gear oil in the tranny
I use the same in engine and transmission , 15w-50 Mobil 1.

It's a long story and another "oil thread".

It's the right grade (uninformed here will shoot that down).
There are gear oils about that are corrosive to the brass and bronze bits on the stator in the primary.
I made this decision after months of researching oil threads on XLFORUM.

Mobile recommends it for engine and transmission.
What about the Harley oil for all 3 holes, SYN3? It's no different.

Re: Primary Drive Oil?

John Davey from the harley shop advised me many years ago to use 20/50 in the primary on ironhead sportys, are they much different these days ? apart from the extra gear,
