KMH Speedo

Hi,

I've learnt how to ride whilst serving with British Forces in Cyprus, and bought a year 2000, 1200 XL Custom Sportster. I am completely new to biking and have a couple of queries about bringing this bike home with me.

The Speedo is KMH, will I need to get a new one in MPH - if so any recommendations ?

As well as looking at "official" speedos - I've seen other for sale say

"Only suitable for Harley Davidson type engine with Electronic Speedometer outlet on gearbox" forgive my ignorance, but does my bike have this ?

Any help would be appreciated - Ta

Re: KMH Speedo

I have no idea about the output from your gear box, but on a bike that new it should be compatible, however, my question is why bother? It is perfectly legal to ride in this country with a KPH speedo, after all with a little practice you can do the conversion in your head, if not you can always put a few stickers on it to tell you where the main limits are, 30, 50, 60 , 70, that is all you need.

Cheers
Mick

Re: KMH Speedo

You can use this:

Speedometer Conversion Stickers KPH mph MPH kph on eBay (end time 13-Jul-09 2146 BST)

or this:

Universal Cable Driven Speedometer KMH To MPH Converter NCS - Systems

and there are electronic versions too if you have a electronic speedo and not a cable driven speedo.

Re: KMH Speedo

That if it works will only alter the digital part of the display. Will need a new faceplate (as Squiz suggests above) in MPH unless it has MPH inside the KPH.

If your speedo makes a buzzing noise when you turn the ignition on and it has a digital mileometer its an eletronic speedo driven by a sensor on the gearbox.

Re: KMH Speedo

I was pondering this over a pint (or 2) at lunch time, so I've just been outside to the car park and checked my 2002 883R.

When I tried the suggestion of holding in the button when the odometer/trip shows total miles..NOTHING CHANGED

I can zero the trip by holding in the button, but not change the odometer at all.

Thus I think its an urban myth.....

I did notice that my speedo face had BOTH MPH and KPH on the dial so you can see what speed your doing on either MPH or KPH at the same time..

How to alter the odometer and trip from miles to kilometers is anther problem, to which I have no answer..

sorry to mislead anybody...

ya live and learn

Do not have the bike switched on.

Just hold the button (the total miles will show) for about 6 or 7 seconds until the display changes to kilometres. Hold again to go back to miles.
urban myth....disproved
Ya live and learn

Re: KMH Speedo

Thanks for the help guys - I bought one of those things that goes on the dial - looks a bit naff but will do while I get used to what the equivalent miles to kilometres are.

As regards a new speedo if I bought one like this for example
NEW Digital Speedometer Speedo Car Streetfighter Harley on eBay (end time 25-Jul-09 07:39:07 BST)

Do any of you know whether it's a case of just taking off the old one and connecting the new one or would there need to be some other adjustments made ?
