Re: which sportster ?????

For what they are worth here are my thoughts...and to echo some of the other posts in this thread...

Things I like about my 2006 883 Custom Sporty as opposed to the standard 883 Sportster. My 2006 model was the last carburated model before fuel Injection. This means a cheaper stage 1. If you want your Sportster to sound like a Harley rather than a sewing machine then at some point you are going to want a stage 1. See other threads on the Evo Sportster forum for stage 1 info and details. (no offence meant to stock sporty riders, respect to you all and each to his/her own).

My 2006 Custom Sporty has a solid, powder coated back wheel which means far easier cleaning with soap, water and paraffin as opposed to washing and at times autosoling a spoked back wheel and getting sore fingers. I'm sure I'll get stick for saying that, spoked back wheels do look nice.

My 2006 Custom model has a 17 litre fuel tank which gets me up-to 150 miles between fills. I know some like the peanut shape tank more and that's cool but if you want more fuel on-board for longer rides then the custom is the way to go.

The Custom models have forward controls which look good and are a must if you are tall and want to ride a Sportster comfortably.

Going on - the Custom model has swept back handlebars thanks to a chrome riser that gives a more upright and in my opinion (being a tall lad) more comfortable ride.

To finish - the 21" chromed front wheel looks nice too on the custom sporty, shared by a few of the big twin models.

I in no way mean to offend anyone or want to get into a pointless argument of which is best because they are all nice. I'm just trying to help the lad decide.

Especially if you are a tall rider Rostro - I would recommend a pre 2007 Custom Model be it 883 or 1200cc. Of course, as always, it depends what each individual is looking for in a bike also their needs and budget.

Regards
Hills

P.s. As far as I know all models of Sportster from 2004 onwards have a rubber mounted engine.

Re: which sportster ?????

A bit late I grant you but I traded my FatBoy for a Nightster and I lurve it to bitz!!!

Far more fun than the FB to ride although the pose on the FatBoy has to be better...........................

The seat gets hard after a hundred miles and after the FB the range is poor but as most of my riding is short distances, I'm happy with the swop!!

Re: which sportster ?????

I rode my mate 883 Sportster I ended buying a 1200 Custom sportster, gotta say I made the right decision in my oppinion, the 1200 pulls away quicker and riders better.

Nothing wrong with the 883, but would wait a little longer and get a 1200 its worth it.

Cool Re: which sportster ?????

If you read up on them, stay away from '86-'90(?) 4 speed sporties.
They have a weak gearbox. Mine went at about 15K, with a bill of about 400 notes. I was told that I'd been lucky because 4 figure sums can be the cost!
However, I got one as you may have guessed, and I love her to bits!

My mate who is a Harley fanatic, told me to get an evo, because the older sportster arent reliable, he has 1974 ( bought new ) and a 1990 sportsters.

Cool Re: which sportster ?????

Yeah, run with an evo to start with.
It's all I know as it's the only one I've had, but apart from that gearbox trouble, it's straight forward.
If the gearbox work has already been done, then one from '86-'90 should be a good buy.
I gotta mate who'll only have shovels, but then it's horses for courses!

I was going to use the line, "that he swears by them," but that would've led to some childish/juvenile quotes or postings! LOL
