Why not do what I did, don't think about it too much, find a low mileage one that looks nice and buy it!!!!!!!!

99 883 XLH sportster with 9k on the clock, purple too, my wifes favourite colour, not had a bike for nearly 30 years, done nearly 40 miles on it now and loving it..........

Nice one Rostro. The 883 Sporty makes a great first Harley, I love every mile I ride on mine, far more than I ever did the jap bike and I liked that.
