Side stand spring lugs

Ok so my missus went over the exit speed buno at stormin and managed to knock the top mounting lug for the side stnd off the frame. Managed to fasten the stand up so we could get home and she has got the bike in for its 5000 miles service the wednesday. My question is how big a job is it to fix this and are the stealers going to be able to do it at the same time as the service?

Re: Side stand spring lugs

Edit: on the title you say "Side stand spring lugs" but in the text you have " Top mounting lug for the side stand" is it the stand mount or spring mount?

On mine its part of the bracket that is in turn welded to the frame.
I can see an unhelpful dealer saying that it needs a new bracket. That needs the old one grinding off and a new one welded on (with the engine removed to gain access to it (ouch!)).
A good welder or machine shop used to working on vehicles should be able to able to improvise something quite suitable and a lot cheaper.
But it may be worth asking the stealer while it's in for a service as it may be a common problem with a quick fix. Let us know how you get on.

Re: Side stand spring lugs

I'd consider grinding off the lug, drilling a hole, tapping a thread and screwing in a bolt.

Re: Side stand spring lugs

recently repaired the dudes lug, lay it on its side ,so that you can see what you are doing, and depending on what is left, weld a washer on the end, or grind it off and weld a bolt on. it may be possible to drill and tap a hole.

Yes its the spring top mount lug - and yep same sort of thing had occured to me - I'll get her to check with the dealer this afternoon (shut on Tuesday's - how the hell to they manage to afford to do that when they close on a Sunday as well!!). But I have required mate with a welder - so that's probably going to be the best bet - and going through the speed bump next time - lol.

This is a good thread from Telboy:

http://www.harley-davidson-hangout.c...kickstand.html

On the way home from the new forest rally, tom hit a pot hole on a bend resulting in the sidestand being ripped off along with half the bracket.

That was a resourceful post, to say the least! Out of pure curiosity where did you get those diagrams?

Cheers,
Pedro.

Re: Side stand spring lugs

Well the stealer couldn't help - no surprise there then as it involved fabrication ather than a high priced oil change!

Might use this and see if my engineer can fabricate something like this to weld on then just paint it up. On the upside they did get my tank in and have agreed to replace both the front and rear fenders under warrantee - result (they also but on the dark custom derby cover at no extra charge!!).
