seat and bars query

Hi All

I see there are a few threads about seats, I have a standard 2000 883C, and fancy making some changes, starting with a new seat - a bit comfier than the standard.

First - any thoughts on what would be a comfy replacement, single or dual (its dual at present, but I can always swap it if the opportunity arises!)

Second - fitting apehangers, what do I need to know? How far can they go before changing wiring, cables, brakelines?

Anybody got a comfy seat or a pair of apes for sale - I have got a couple of seats on 'watch' on ebay, but I am not sure if they are going to fit or be any better than the standard.

All advice gratefully received.

All the best

Dave

Check out whats for sale against a Harley Catalogue. There are quite a few variations, at least in the Cat you can see what year and Model they fit...

Just a heads up... of if you dont have one I can list the p/nos and seat details if you are going to replace with stock.

Same goes for non stock look at the La Pera website and identify your need same with Mustang and god knows how many other after market manufacturers

Re: seat and bars query

It it helps
I had a really hard ride on my nightster and the shorter shocks fitted didn't help, couple of bumps shot right up my backbone. However I fitted a single mustang seat classic with the fringes which I found much better. Important to get the right one for the tank size though.

Re: seat and bars query

Just browsing Jersey HD and they have a pillow look touring seat - looks very comfy - any thoughts?

Pillow-Look Touring Seat

Thanks for the comments so far.

They also have the Brawler single seat - I have heard the name before, but has anybody used one?

Thanks
Dave

Re: seat and bars query

I put HD "mini-apes" on my '91 XL and the cables reached just about OK, although i had already fitted a braided brake hose instead of the (partially rigid) original pipe.

I think this is what HD intended with most of their alternative 'bars - "Fits with no other modifications" - and that they tend to do that across the model range and across the years.

However, if you wanted to go higher (mini-apes are only about 10") then you would definately be into extending the wiring to your handlebar switches, and possibly your brake hose and clutch cable too. At this point you start spending more money on that stuff than on the new handlebars, plus if you're not all that handy in the workshop you'll probably be paying somebody else to do it for you.

Maybe someone who's been through that loop could post with the cost they ended up with? I'd only be guessing but with labour it could be maybe £300 all in (double that for a stealership of course ...!!)

Re: seat and bars query

I will take a look at the mini apes - I hadn't come across those before, so thanks for the tip - I didn't want to ruin what I have, so if I can fit them to existing wiring etc. its a way to start!

I will be doing it myself, so its parts only - I recently had to fit a new handbrake switch - now I know why they are supplied with yards of wire!!

Thanks for the advice.

Pillow-Look Touring Seat

When I had a Sporty I fitted one of these seats and in my experience it was exceedingly comfy.

Re: seat and bars query

I've got a Pillow Seat on my 1200 Custom . . VERY comfortable for both rider and pillion. Bought mine from V-Twin Mania, excellent service and advice.

Re: seat and bars query

I just fitted a La Pera single seat to my bike and it looks the nuts. I'll say it was a tight fit around the ignition but it isn't sitting on it at all. It does not have the central bracket facility but it sits down low it can't move. The rear screw bracket needed some grunt to get it to sit down as well but once on it really lenghens & lowers the bike's look. Comfy as well considering it's a bare bones model.
