Always check that the battery terminals (especially the negative) are not even slightly loose . . it won't start unless there's a good, firm connection. I always carry spanners with me now, 'cos this has happened to mine three times in 18 months (same bike 1200 Custom 2004)

As advised check battery, cables and cable connections both ends, Don't just tighten but remove and clean before replacing with a little electrolytic grease if possible. Also remove and clean all the fuses including the large one by itself below the others, again with a little electrolitic grease if you have it. And check all the connections on the starter motor and solenoid. Are you sure the battery charger is working?

When you remove the cables give them a good tug at either end, you'll probably find the negative cable has corroded away near the starter motor. It's such a common fault that the stealerships hold the negative cable in stock tho they will tell you it's because they are someetimes missing off new bikes.

I bought a new Varta battery earlier in the year and it was faulty. It wouldn't take a charge at all. When the factor changed it he said that this is not uncommon. The replacement is fine.

Re: Starting Problems XL1200 Custom

same problem - got stranded in town. check battery cables mine vibrated loose.

had to be careful with the alarm and a big red isolator/fuse connector in batt compartment - needs to be disconneted before the battery comes out - can't remember the advice but the clever guys on the forum will know what to do.
