| Re: Poss Ferked Battery or Reg
STRAIGHT off the charger you will prob see 13-plus volts, Rich. When you hook it up this morning, it's kinda guaranteed to start. Shut it down when it does. Then put voltmeter leads across the battery with ignition off. You will prob get 12.7 to 12.9 V. Which is good. Maybe a bit more. Then turn the KEY on. Don't try to fire her up, just ignition on. Now what does it read across battery terminals? If it's around !2.0-12.5V, yer good to go. With this ''poor boy load test'', if it reads anything well below 12V, it's not gonna start on the button. Your battery cannot hold a load...and it does need replacing. Then you gotta figure out why.... Ignition OFF. Pull the reg plug out of the stator and make sure that when you test ***each*** regulator plug pin with the voltmeter (red wire into the plug pin, black wire to a known good ground i.e. engine case) that you do not get more than about a volt. If you are reading 3, 5, 7, 9 or even 11 volts there, your regulator is stuffed and battery voltage is leaking out of it and to ground....draining your battery and just waiting to strand you on the roadside...... It's happened to me... All this is in the troubleshoot file....just restating. Good luck mate! |

| Re: Poss Ferked Battery or Reg
Sorry for not getting back sooner. On Sun morn the battery was sitting at 12.5 volts. Put back in the bike, and with the help of my daughter, revved the bike up to 2k - 2.5k the voltage did not go up. This morning pulled the stator lead, which sits at the bottom frame rail just below the regulator, was getting figures of 7 & 11 in both plug pins. |

Cheers Dave. Was starting to think along those lines myself, just needed someone more experienced to confirm it. Once again many thanx, and the same goes to all who replied. Last edited by 1sportyrich; 30-09-2009 at 06:55 PM. Reason: added extra text |

| Part 2. Yesterday fitted a new regulator, fired up the sportie and let her sit 'til she warmed up and was getting 14.2 volts. Decided to take her for a spin today, after yesterdays wind had died down. Went out after the Moto GP and tried to fire her up, nuffin, nada, ferk all, just the starter turning over. Turned the ignition off, votmeter out and got 12.2, ignition on 11.6. So will follow my own recommendation and phone a certain person tomorrow at 5:30 ish. Will you be in Phil ![]() .

You didn't waste money on the reg. It appears the stuffed one took out the battery at the same time......it's happened to me.

New Odyssey battery arrived on Thurs. Fitted it and took the bike out for a spin later on, no probs. Left it overnight and after work checked the voltage, same as it arrived 12.6. Took the bike to work today,no worries yet. Battery cost 91 quid including postage from an e-bay shop. Thanx to all who took the time to reply and point me in the right direction. |
