Rust 2007 1200C

Just notice that my 07 1200C is rotting away on the rear fender.

To the right of the rear light unit, you can see the rust bubbling the paint up for about 4" x 2" area. Looks like tin rot is well under way.

I have notice the paint has come off in quite large flakes under the fender

I have a garage, not heated and I keep the bike in an bike tent inside the garage its loose fitting and breathes well. I have an 'Air Force' Blaster which I use when I wash the bike or if it gets wet.

My question are: Should a 2 year old bike start to rot like this?
would rot be covered by warranty

My old 02 hasnt got a spot of rust...

Any experience of this anyone..?

No but I would think it is serious grounds for complaint. Can't understand why they have metal mudguards anyway.

We see a lot of this problem on late models. If you look closely you'll see that there is no sign of primer or anything else under the base coat and lacquer.

In my opinion you should not see this sort of problem on a two year old vehicle and definitely not on what is supposed to be a quality vehicle like the MoCo would have us believe.

As a point in fact my 1997 Glide has had a particulary hard life and apart from a few dinks in the paint there is no sign of any rust coming from under the paint anywhere.

Personally I wouldn't buy a new model for exactly these sorts of problems.

Monkeybrain looked at a 2005 SG that had rust in the same place. Could it be a quality control problem?

I took the front mudguard off about two weeks ago because I notice rust on the front edge where the mteal is rolled I was going to touch it up with Hammerite Smoothe, but now I have noticed this Im glad I didnt bother.

I will have a chat with the selling dealer, but I guess they will say steel will rust...

and yet my 02 is rock solid, the wheels fell to pieces mind you.

I reckon they have 'value engineered' down to the most basic spec...

I was going to buy the 10' Wide Glide bit Im not going to invest in something that I will worry about especially £10,500.00 worth.

Thanks for the reply.

That is almost mirror image of mine.... I think the metal is sort of rolled into a seam unsder there (could be wrong).. Kev

Re: Rust 2007 1200C

You answered your own question; if the '02 is OK, then there should be no trace of corrosion on the '07, unless it had been dinged at some point.

My '03 Softail is OK after 40,000 miles, but does not get ridden in the winter salt. Even with salt, you should have no significant corrosion on painted metal after only 2 years.
Something not been done right...

Re: Rust 2007 1200C

I have a year old 883.......been out in the wet just once (going for its 1st service...sods law,eh?).......I later noticed rust on the wheels! I heard on the web that the wheels are chromed in Taiwan!! :-( In a week or so I plan to clean every inch of the bike, wax everything..PLUS brush on that expensive anti-corrosion stuff....cant recall the name. It in an unheated, but ventilated shed, and seemed happy enough last Winter.

a mate of mine has a Drifter with the plastic mudguards and they are all very well, but it DOES make it awkward to hang panniers etc on the back. It also suffers from "Vincent-itis" in that the seat sticks up forlornly at the back because the mudguard doesn't support it at all.

Any bike with plastic mudguards needs a properly engineered support frame to carry any items around the back.

Re: Rust 2007 1200C

I've a 07 Dyna the paint started to come off the front mudguard after a year, got that changed under warranty, then the bottom edge of the rear mudguard has gone after 2 years, warranty was out so i touched it up , I to noticed there was no etch or primer on the steel,
Went for a blast the other day , when i got back a big strip of about 6" x 1/2" had blown off the side edge of the rear.
The Bike wont be 3 years old until November.
I'll have to strip it down and have it done properly
