Re: bad starter

Weak spark or fouled plugs or flooded and has to burn off fuel or timing out or....so it goes on.

Re: bad starter

I have set the timing allready. I agree on weak spark. Seein as the battery is healthy what could cause this.

Re: bad starter

Iridium plugs give a really strong spark and will last 30,000 miles. I use them on my British magneto sparked bikes and they take the effort out of starting as well as improving performance. Search on ebay.

Re: bad starter

This will sound silly but it works, try starting it at night when it is dark and looking around the coil, ht leads and plugs.
Any break down will show straight away with sparks running to ground, that will make for a weak spark at the plugs.

Re: bad starter

I`ll second what Hawkeye says, mine was running poor, intermittently, in the dark garage I could see the spark from a worn HT lead arcing on the head.

Re: bad starter

Recommend one of these when testing for spark, sometimes you'll get a spark in the open but not under compression.

Re: bad starter

Thanx for all the info. I checked for a spark and any arcing from the h.t. leads in a very dark garage and everythin seems fine. I will be doin a ground up rebuild over the winter but if I can sort out any faults before hand its less to do later. Not workin tomorow so will check timing etc. I thought maybe this may have been a common fault and there was a cure in fittin better coils, leads, points etc. Ya won't find out if ya don't ask. Cheers.
