Re: which sportster manual?

The Haynes manual isn't very good at all, and the Clymer is a bit better, but what you really should go for is the Harley Davidson one. It is worth the extra, but you may get one second hand on ebay.

Agree with Bilbo, have had a Cymer manual for a while, but just got the HD one, and is vastly superior, with some nice exploded drawings. Well worth paying the extra.

plus one to that statement

buy the factory manual - they turn ip on flea bay all the time, also try Pooks for Books, they have loads of manuals and original brochures for all sorts

Re: which sportster manual?

Nick, they sometimes come up on e-bay in CD format; got one for my XL1200R for about a tenner IIRC.

Only bind of course is that if you ain't either got a laptop to take to the garage, or an understanding better half who allows the Sporty into the house, you have to print the relevant pages off.

+1 on what the others said though, factory manual is the best though a Clymer has its uses. Haynes are pants.

but they do have a damm good motor museum paid for out of the proceeds of all their manuals including amongst other a genuine crocker, unfortuneately its not the V twin but a single banger speedway bike - still impressive

Available to dowlnoad as a PDF for about a fiver:

DOWNLOAD 1986 2003 Harley Davidson Sportster Repair Manual SERVICE PROCEDURES, SPECIFICATIONS, REPAIR GUIDE XL XLH - Download Technical

I have Clymer and Haynes and can confirm that there is no comparison.

Tiz, want to keep hold of for ref, but if you want it on extended loan, you are more than welcome. You can always borrow the HD manual anyway.

Re: which sportster manual?

I have both the Clymer and the HD Service Manual. I find the Clymer is easier to navigate and find the page you want. I also have the HD Parts Manual and that really is worth having. This set of 3 covers most angles and I'd recommend them all.
