Hello,

I take possession of a new 883 Iron on Saturday after finally giving up the fight of trying to handle all 320 Kg of Triumph Rocket III through London Traffic.

Having become acclimatised to a bike that only returns around 32 MPG!! , it will be interesting to hear from you guys what you get out of your Sportsters.

A quick (and I guess obvious) question, how much does it knock the MPG down by fitting stage 1 to these motors?, and I guess that would involve: increased air flow to allow the bike to breath better, some form of “Tune Boy” to alter the ECU fuel / air mapping and better through-flow exhausts?

Any advice to a Sportster newbie appreciated.

Cheers
Steve

Hi Steve,

I get around double that mpg on my 2006 883r (carb model). I would ride the bike as it is for a while and see how you like it. I've not bothered with the stage one, although I do now have slightly louder pipes. You can do that mod (slip on mufflers) to yours with no other changes required.

I hope you enjoy your new ride.

Cheers,

Are you sure there's a main jet fitted.
Think i could get 50 out of mine as well. The ol accelerator pump dishes out a healthy squirt every twist of the throttle so light use of it may help.

Thanks OR, I'm aware that if I put really big bore pipes on the bike it will run too lean and then I've got to also address that with a modified map and better air intake, but what do you think Harley mean by this statement:

"Screamin' Eagle® Street Performance Slip-On Shorty Dual Mufflers - Jet Black

Street performance factory tuned mufflers now available in a tough black finish. Mufflers features high flowing internals to maximize performance, an aggressive exhaust note"

Harley-Davidson USA | Accessories And Apparel | Genuine Motor Accessories

Does factory tuned = no need to re-map or up the air intake (i.e. just slip these on without any other mods and keep the rest of the bike stock)?

Cheers
Steve

Re: New Evo Sportster Member

Hi there,

I'm new here and with H-D.
I have also Iron 883 and its like be born again , I dreamed about harley 25 years !!!! and its mine.
Any way Im not familiar with mpg but i can easily do 90miles + till reserve will start flashing on London's traffic, one day I push it a bit and I got 100 miles and end up immediately on Shell

Stage 1????
I was thinking about it ....and .....for sure im not going to waste £1200-£1400
for something which i can do with pretty expensive way for £600 (inc. nice pipes, SE filter and Fuelpac) or even cheaper.

Plans for near future : Im going nicely drill out baffle and get nice sound, and when spring will come im going buy nice KhromeWerks slip-ons and blacked them and it will be completely enough to get avalanche of complains from neighbourhood.

So this is my idea of Iron 883 by MacShot.

cheers

I regularly get 53 mpg out of my stage 2 1200R, my mate gets up to 72! on his stage 1 883 Custom when we go out on the same journey.

I have the Street Performance mufflers on my bike and I think they sound just about right. You are correct, you can put these on with no other changes to your bike and you get a performance boost thrown in for free! Well not exactly if you see the price of these things. I didn't notice any change in performance, good or bad, but mine is an earlier carb model.

Last time I looked the black ones were far more expensive compared to the chrome. Also, I had to buy them in from the States as I couldn't get them over here. Cost around £250 including duty.

PM me if you want details of where I bought them.

Also, an important note for anyone buying in from the States: Don't use PayPal (unless it's an ebay item) as you lose your Credit Card cover if things go wrong, even if you paid by Credit Card via PayPal! Phone the Company direct and use your Credit Card for full UK cover.

I hope this helps,

Cheers,

OR........

I did a lot of experimenting with this buying a spare pair of mufflers from ebay to use as a test bed. I found it was very successful and the best sound improvement I got was using a 16mm drill bit and ensuring the hole was dead centre. I always drilled the baffles with the mufflers off the bike.

Having said this the sound was never as good as the HD Street Performance mufflers I now have.

Cheers,
