Down Pipes?

Hi all - Well, you have to pay for your education and I'm stumping up! Just bought a pair of SE II's from Ebay. Took them 8 days to come 60 miles by post but that's another subject.....
Went out to the garage to offer them up beside the existing mufflers, wow, they look really good! Will be even better when on the bike.
Back from work went out to the garage to remove the old mufflers, bugger me, can't find the clamp. Long story short pipes and mufflers are all of a piece!
Raked through all of the old paperwork that came with the bike and the exhaust system appears to be a Bad Boy. It certainly is as far as I'm concerned.
My question; I now need pipes and clamps and what else, gaskets, heat shields, bits of twisted wire? I'm looking for a parts book but no luck so far, so can anybody help with part nos. advice, all and any comments welcome.
These might appear to be simple questions to you guys in the know, but I honestly think that Harley info for us beginners is very confusing.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Down Pipes?

Not trying to make it worse. I expect you are aware that pre 04 and post 04 (rubber and pre rubbermount) mufflers are different and a pre 04 will not fit on a post 04 and visa versa. Post 04 mufflers are mounted on a balance pipe between the mufflers while ridgid mounts have the balance pipe between the downpipes near the top.

Re: Down Pipes?

What year is it Robin. I can let you have a parts manual for (I think) a 2003 model. Have you measured the outside diameter of your existing pipes? If they are 1 3/4" then there is nothing to stop you just cutting them off at a suitable spot. A balance pipe is not strictly necessary.

Re: Down Pipes?

Thanks everybody for your help. Of course I should have said the bike is a 1993 XLH 1200 Sportster. No balance pipe fitted. Thanks David for the offer of the book, and I never thought of cutting them to suit. I don't want to scrap the mufflers though, as they are in perfect condition, just don't much like the look of them! I'll take them off and store them. Might need them for the MOT anyway!
So I need to find a set of pipes and all the doin's. Any pitfalls to watch out for?

Re: Down Pipes?

One way around it would be to buy a set of cheap drag pipes and cut them down to suit. Would be a hell of a lot cheaper than stock headers unless you can find a good second hand pair.

I believe these will fit:

Harley Davidson Exhaust 1200 Sportster 1996 pipes on eBay (end time 26-Oct-09 08:32:09 GMT)

Cheers,
