Re: Problem tightening lower shock bolt

Would the 3/4" from this set do?

Halfords Professional Imperial Combination Spanner Set from Halfords Price £19.99

It's a good set for general use.

Re: Problem tightening lower shock bolt

Hey guys!

Was going to position the spanner straight down as Urrell suggested, but realised I'd better first get a new set of nuts and a good spanner. Will definitely look into that Halfords set.

The stealership wants to charge me £2.16 for 1 locknut (Part 7824). Could I just get these instead:

3/4" UNF NYLON NYLOC LOCK NUT BZP (4 PACK) on eBay (end time 18-Nov-09 20:21:33 GMT)

or

3/4 UNC NYLOC NUT IN STEEL 5 PACK on eBay (end time 10-Nov-09 11:31:16 GMT)

or if anyone else has any other suggestions or knows where I could get a quality set of nuts for cheaper than what the dealer wants to charge?

Thanks again guys, all your help is really useful and I appreciate it!

Re: Problem tightening lower shock bolt

3/4" AF is the spanner size (across flats) the bolt diameter will be less.

7824 is 1/2" UNF.

If you've got the parts book it should be listed at the back as 1/2" x 20 Grade 2.

NAMRICK : U.N.F. HIGH TENSILE BOLTS & NUTS

£0.57 each.

Re: Problem tightening lower shock bolt

If you use Lock-nuts re-torque the joint together at the higher end of the recommended torque setting.

Just over £4 for two locknuts. Not too bad when you consider the safety aspect. Why spend a couple of quid trying to save one?

Re: Problem tightening lower shock bolt

Hey all,

Limey_Dave: Thank you looking up the description of the nut! That's super helpful

Urrell: Absolutely no way I will compromise on safety: I was just looking for a nut of comparable (or even better) quality. I'd like to also have a few at hand just in case I need them again.

Does anyone know if those Namrick nuts are of the same or better quality than the one the dealership will sell me? If they aren't I will get a couple from Jersey HD and a few other bits (like a parts book)

Thank you again guys, shows I still have a lot to learn

Re: Problem tightening lower shock bolt

I'll second that about cheap tools. I want into a local hardware store in 1979 to buy a cheap 10mm spanner. They didn't have one but the guy convinced me to spend well over £2 (a lot of money then) on a King Dick. I still use that spanner today and there is barely a mark on it.
