Retainer bracket - forwards?

Anyone clear on what this attatches to please? Part 34639 comes with kit where you change the gear shift to forwards and the loose shift lever is left dangling. The only possibility i can see is the rear crankcase bolt at the bottom of the barrels but that don't seem right?

Re: Retainer bracket - forwards?

It's normal on most forward kits to secure the "old" cross over shaft to the crankcase bolt at the back of the engine with a bracket.

Without seeing the part you are referring to or having more detail (like who manufactured the kit) I can't say with any great authority.

I've got V-Twin forwards on my FXR and I fabbed a tiny bracket to fit to the rear crankcase bolt above the primary - this holds the original shifter arm in place.

Re: Retainer bracket - forwards?

This should be what you're looking for. It's for 2001 onwards only.

Re: Retainer bracket - forwards?

Thanks for replies. The item i have is 10 and not 13 on the diagram and according to those instructions it SHOULD atach to the rear crankcase bolt! However as my bike is 2000 and not 2001, apparently i should be using bracket 13. But i can't see why bracket 10 would not fit - bizzare!

Re: Retainer bracket - forwards?

If your bike was registered late 2000 , it could be a 2001 model. I have a 2003 Anniversary Softail that was registered in 2002 on a '52 reg, and clearly was built months before that.

Re: Retainer bracket - forwards?

Could be jake but can't see what would make the difference for the different brackets. Presumably both 2000 and 2001 have a crankcase bolt there???

Re: Retainer bracket - forwards?

Don't know.

Yes, they both have a bolt there, because the instruction sheet says so, but the brackets are completely different lengths, aren't they?

So either the bolt is slightly different in position, or the shifter arm is a different shape, or the position they want to retain the shifter varies from one year to another?

One thing for sure, Harley wouldn't make 2 different brackets if one would do. I was kind of imagining it would be obvious when you had the parts and the bike in front of you, but seems not...

Re: Retainer bracket - forwards?

Well i think the shorter version will fit my bike which means it must be 2001, even though first registered in 2000 or that it doesn,t really matter.
Thanks
