Weak Horn

Hi,

For some reason my horn gives out a very sad weak blast even superman would'nt be able hear it if he were standing next to the bike.

Its a 2005 Road King,i had a 600 mile ride out this weekend,Saturday we got drowned and the RK went thru lots of puddles(Winchester got a real hammering),got it home washed and rinsed it off right away.I noticed during the day the horn was faulty so i checked both the conectors were on secure to the actual horn down the engine end.

Any ideas chaps.......my technical know how is zilch, bike of course is still under warranty.

Thanks In Advance

Steve

Re: Weak Horn

Its got water in it, spray inside with a dispersant (wd40) and dry it out (hairdryer)should work again even if you leave it it will work again eventually

Re: Weak Horn

Steve,

Sometimes the actual horn unit itself is screwed too tightly to the horn cover. This can cause the unit to give off a weak tone. If you loosen very slightly the nut where the horn unit is mounted to the horn cover, you may find that your horn tone returns to normal. This could be the adjuster screw to which Simon refers.

Re: Weak Horn

If all else fails, the remedy is to fit an aftermarket horn of similar size but rated as 6 volt. It will not burn out or damage your electrics. Its a tried and tested method that I have used many times on different bikes with rubbish standard fitments. With 12 volts running through it it will go berserk. It also gives it more tuning potential via the adjusting screw to give it the tone of your choice ( mine sounds like a strangled chicken only very loud).

Re: Weak Horn

Bypass the ground (earth) then try it. If it works put your own ground on.
Quite common on 05`s.

Re: Weak Horn

Hi,

Thanks for the replys. It seems to be dried out now and sounds much healthier. It certainly did get a soaking on saturday.

I had collected some Friends from the channel tunnel on their bikes,we then rode to Winchester on A roads & B roads to meet some more biker friends, then on to Salisbury to camp(not me i was going home)upon arrival at the camp site, the owners informed us that during the downpour a couple of hours previous a couple of tents and awnings were washed away.

The Frenchies could'nt belive it,still i think they enjoyed themselves, met up with them the following day to escort them back to the tunnel.

Anyway once again thanks.

Steve
