Unhappy Shat myself!!

Further to my post elsewhere ref Nology hotwires. I have just fitted them to my Wide Glide, and grounded both leads to the front top engine mount bolt. Go to start it up with the enricher full on, which takes a bit cause the battery is low, and after a few seconds of turning it over there is an almighty f***ing bang from, I think, the rear exhaust. Nearly shat myself, wife came running out the house as well. Thing is, what now? It was a real sharp crack, not much like a backfire I don't think. Engine will turn over and didn't sound as if the engine was a bucket of goo, but haven't got it started and don't want to push it if I'm going to cause damage. Any ideas?

Re: Shat myself!!

The first thing that springs to mind is you may have the front/rear swapped about. Try reversing the leads at the coil end and see.

The reason i suspect this-----done it myself once

Ah Hah! Pictures in my Haynes are a bit small, but short one (rear) on top right? I know I must appear a real ponce about this, but I have such a bad history with machinery that the slightest thing sends me into a right doom! Cheers Mate.

To many curries mate. The first thing i would do is change your running gear.
Fuel being pumped into the cylinders when you turn the bike over. Followed later by a spark = very big bang.

Re: Shat myself!!

Yeah, real sharp crack probably not the best phrase on reflection. Thinking it through logically I guess it must have been what you say, just never had it before and it shocked the life out of us. By the way, if the leads had been the wrong way round, as described above, would it have sparked? I assume the timing would have been halfway out.

Re: Shat myself!!

It must have Gus to make the bang, the leads being connected up wrong will make a spark.

Get yourself the pukka service manual for your machine. A fair few folk on here have said that the Haynes isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

Re: Shat myself!!

I have been trying to find some of these Hotleads - where did you find them?
I'll remember to have a change of underwear ready when I fit them
