Final Drive Ratio

Just putting the bike back together after a winter rebuild, as it needed a belt, (good excuse). I bought a nearly new rear drive pulley, assuming it was a 64 tooth, after a count, it turned out to be 65, the old one was a 61, the gearbox has at sometime (as it is written behind the pulley) been a 35 tooth, but is now a 32, obviously more on the front less on the back = higher gearing, the pulley is off a later softail, mine is a 1990, who's a bit clever on gearing?

Re: Final Drive Ratio

the old adage is ...........you want it like your mistress.....

''big at the front, small at the rear''

sounds to me you are now smaller at the front and bigger at the rear than stock. Which equals far higher cruising revs at 60-70mph. Though you will be (relatively) devastating from the lights

It's all here matey...........

Re: Final Drive Ratio

Thanks for the table Dave, looks like I've gone back to the standard set up for the year, I always though that the gearing was pretty tall, and felt that the motor could rev a bit more.
I'll check the primary gearing tommorrow.
That's a handy table you've posted, cheers again,

Hi Exile58.

I have the HD Ratio Calc Displacement and Drive Ratio Calculator.

PM with an email address and I'll send it to you.

Perhaps it will help you.

Re: Final Drive Ratio

I'd like to get a front pulley with one more tooth, as I can't afford a six speed conversion on my '06 Heritage. Can someone tell me where to get one?

Can you get the speedo re-calibrated or do you just not bother. Every other bike i've owned has had a front wheel speedo drive.

Cheers.

Re: Final Drive Ratio

i have fitted the jims maching 34 tooth pulleys [stock is 32]to several softails and dynas with good results.the owners report a slight difference in the speedo reading but none have bothering recalibrating.with this setup you can reuse your final drive belt and get a drop of approx 350 rpm at cruising speeds in top gear.all report better fuel mileage too.one of them is running an 80 "evo with modded cv carb,hi flo filter,v+h pipes and andrews cam,he gets 55mpg and 115mph two up ! and he weighs 16 stone on his own.as far as i know 33tooth pulleys are only available for 4 speed trannys, cheers

PLS,

Just browsing and came across this. With a front wheel driven speedo there is no need to recalibrate when changing the bike's gearing, as the front wheel is not affected, so the speedo carries on as before.

The only time any recalibration might be needed is when changing the front tyre size significantly (can't think of a circumstance myself) or using the speedo drive unit with a different diameter wheel (where the rolling diameter of the fitted tyre is different).

We have just lowered the gearing on my wife's 2003 Dyna, to give it a bit more get up and go. UK (European?) models have very tall gearing for noise measurement purposes, so I would hesitate to increase gearing (or fit a 6-speed conversion!).
