Thinking of buying a Garmin Zumo 550, any opinions from owners of said SatNav?

Re: Gps

Good system. Can also be integrated with Bluetooth solution available from Baron Trikes in Andover.

Re: Gps

Hi Trevor

Had the 550 for 3 weeks very good bit of kit. I use it with the scarla rider team headset so the pillion can hear phone and MP3 as well only bad part is you have to download the instructions in PDF no prob but 64 pages in total. Also the mp3 sounds a bit tinny and if you have got loud pipes might be a problem at speeds but in all an excellent bit of kit and would fully recommend . You also get the car kit aswell as the bike kit, so easy to interchange also great for entering cordinates if you do any hill walking . have had a couple of gps's but this is the dogs bollocks.
Dont pay any silly prices, the 500 is about £300 and the 550 is £450, but they are coming down in price if you can wait which i couldnt.

Feel free to pm me if you have any questions.

Good luck

Brian

Re: Gps

Yes I have a Zumo 550 it’s the dogs bollocks, I’ve had it since they came out it cost me £550.00, make sure you download the latest software version as soon as you get it you can do it on line at Garmin.com, if you have any problems on how best to use it just ask, I’ve been all over Europe with mine.

If you send me your email address I'll sent you a few pictures of how and where I've mounted the Zumo on my Road King.

Re: Gps

My boy uses one on his Suzukihuufspit. Swears it's the Dogs on his daily scoot round London. Software seem the same as on the Misses' Garmin. Only once has it taken us down a side street and told us to take a left over the other side of the bollards blocking the road. And it does get a bit confused if you don't do what you're told. The map goes all sideways and it's sense of direction goes arse upward until you get obviously off route then it recalculates.

Re: Gps

Hi Trevor

Yes the 550 would find hotels just by entering the address or postcode. Also what ever area you are in if you do a search on gps it will list all local ones in the vicinity. Ive never used mine abroad but assume it will still work the same as you have all the maps loaded.

Re: Gps

Maybe the Zumo is better but on tomtom I think the standard Europe maps are main roads only, the street index is an upgrade. Also postcode search only works for UK and NL.

Re: Gps

I’ve been across central Europe with mine a few times on my own, I ride till about 4/5ish then select lodging and it finds several places all within a few miles of where I am at the time, it certainty takes the worry out of travelling with out any prior organisation, and what’s more you just don’t know what you are going to find or see, Just make sure when you are aboard to remove toll roads and take the shortest route unless you are on a mission, as with all sat nav’s petrol stations in the UK and overseas are just a click away and that’s a god sent when you have just flipped over to reserve and you don’t know where the hell you are, it also let’s you ride your bike and observe the traffic and scenery around you without having to constantly check road signs and worry weather you have made a wrong turn or not, hopefully like me you’ll find it to be the best piece of technology you have ever purchased!!
