CB Radio urgent question - UK UK UK

Hi there,
I would really like a response from someone in the UK if possible (or anyone else that may know).

My friends have Harley CB Radios fitted to their Ultras (they came supplied with the bikes). So I was thinking of getting a portable CB to fit to my intercom.

Question:
When Harley supply bikes to BRITISH dealers, do the cb radios come with BRITISH CB frequencies, or do they remain on the "American" bands (which are different).

I need to know, as I don't want to go to the expense of buying a CB in the UK, if the frequencies are different to the CBs my friends have on the on their bikes.

I asked the dealer, but they haven't a clue!

SO If there is someone in the UK reading this - are they able to talk to non-harley CB'ers on their units? (that would probably answer my question).

Thanks

I don't know if in the UK they come as standard. Someone will know.

Re: CB Radio urgent question - UK UK UK

Pretty sure they are on the Euro standard. I've chatted with Swiss riders on my way to rallies. My Evo Ultra has the separate transceiver under the top box and it has a plate on the side which says "GB"
I believe the old UK standard was different and for a time the old UK and the new European standards were running at the same time for the benefit of those with old CB sets, so two lots of 40 channels.
I sometimes leave mine switched on in the UK but all I ever pick up is foreign truckers and the occasional domestic set.

Thanks to all who replied.
I think I will take a chance and go for the Euro & UK bands (I can get a dual band CB handset).

You may see it on eBay if it doesn't work!!!!

If you're looking for a hand held UK / Euro you might try the Midland. I've been using these for years in my Landy. They are seriously durable and weather (as in deep mud) proof. Reception is as good as regular unit in vehicle when connected to an external ariel, and excellent out in the open.

Even though every dealer I called gave a different answer! I am fairly sure the CBs are on the Euro settings. HD in the USA seemed to think so too - so I'll go with that, and if it doesn't work, I will stick it on eBay.

I was looking at the Midland Alan 42 (which covers the whole of Europe). It also seems to connect to my Starcom intercom. If it does turns out that the Ultra riders are on the USA settings, Midland market a similar radio in the US, which cosmetically, looks the same (although the model number is completely different) - and is cheaper!

Not fussed about speaking to truckers and other UK users - just fellow harley riders!

This is the midland radio:

Re: CB Radio urgent question - UK UK UK

If I remember right, the original US standard chanels were AM 26.965 (1) > AM 27.405 (40) as with Baza's listings

Then this stupid country bought out FM with 40 very odd channels, just to ensure that we were not compatable with anyone else, except the 3 million kids that killed it off in a short time of it being 'legal' ..... Upside of the UK set were better quality with the FM signal. (hehe but the rest of us stayed with our LSB/USB setups and ignored them anyway ...)

The rest of europe was using the US AM channels (legal or not, dont know or care) but sometime 'legalised' the same 40 channels with the better FM signal. downside is all the noise from the other 50 billion AM users worldwide at different times of day/season etc.

But to get to the point, that handheld you show will do all of em, but technically wont be legal in any of em (because its capable of transmitting on non legal frequencies) If you ignore that small part, it will do what you want perfectly well

I would imagine that a HD supplied one would work on the US standard 40 Channels AM. (dont know if they can use FM, and the set would have to comply with those regs) I would be very supprised if they were allowed to import a bike with a non UK conforming CB fitted. but then this IS HD ...

If your using it to chat with mates on the bikes, always go with the FM signal. forget AM if you can, its shite.

good grief, that all sounds like total verbal diahorear (or however its spelt)

time for a beer to wash mouth out!

Thanks mate. In fact I was one of those "kids" who had the original FM CBs! Takes me back... I remember at the time they really clamped down on AM. I am fairly sure the HD bikes are on the Euro channels. But if they are not, I will get the US version from eBay - as for the rules, I gave up living by them!

Here's a link to the official word.

As I said my CB transceiver has a plate on the side with "GB" on it. The rules on CBs vary so much over the world. In some markets CBs can't be fitted to bikes (Japan ??) So would expect the International Models to be Kosher on the CB fitted just as much as running lights and stuff. Not a bit surprised that the dealers don't know. I was told that the CB was USA frequencies but I was also told that I needed rear brake pads for my Ironhead.
