Sorting Single Side Brakes.......

4- years I've been chopping this bike up for and I've never had the brakes stopping like I wanted. It had a set of Big Billet 6's on but it needed more.
3-4 years ago I thought a floating disk would do it, but I wasn't paying the shop prices so I found at the local scrapyard a set of early GSXR discs (£10 a pair) almost the same hub stud pattern but with a 8mm offset,- so I had the forks milled to suit the disc.
They were also anodized gold,- but a quick dip in caustic soda soon sorted that.

Then I sat it out and waited for a Goodrich hose £20 on e-bay but it needed 4" chopped,- easy.
This week I got a BDL master cylinder. been running a modern H-D one,- but it's fugly. This one pretty and was only £50 on e-bay (even better than that it was on the O'Lady's account).

Now it stops almost like a jap sports bike,- pity H-D didn't sort it like that in the first place.

Nice job!!

I have to have every new front disc milled to fit because I run an AMF Shovel mag, but have Evo fork sliders / caliper mounts. But these issues are a small price for the look we want, or the bargain we love! And you've done it cheaper than even a Fabricator Kevin setup.....

Re: Sorting Single Side Brakes.......

Neat!

Is the new master cylinder smaller bore than the H-D one? I sleeved my three-quarter inch '70s m/cyl down to five-eighths and it made a huge difference to the stock brake (was like trying to squeeze a block of wood -would have said brick but might have mis-typed ).
Cheers, Pete.

Re: Sorting Single Side Brakes.......

It's 5/8's straight from BDL same as the H-D one. But it seems much more solid than the H-D one which had a little give on the bars and would have a little bit of play when pulled really hard, there was also fairly large amount of play with the lever when in position, the new one seems much more accurately machined and has sorted all these issues.

Re: Sorting Single Side Brakes.......

Isn't it great when a lot of work like that has the result you wanted?
Like you said, pity it wasn't right in the first place.
I've often heard it quoted that H-D wouldn't fit powerful brakes in case they got sued by crashers, surely that can't be right because ever other manufacturer got around to fitting them in fairly short order.
Cheers, Pete.

I'll give Fab Kev his due his work is immaculate- much better than I could of hoped to do. Been looking at some of his bikes/work on the US sites- really inspiring.
