What oils are you guys using and is it realy neccessary to have a dealer service history. Mines still in warrenty but as soon as it is out I may do my own.

Welcome to the Forum and hope you join the club.

With ref to your question: 2 of my mates and myself have between us covered over 250,000 miles on Harleys. Apart from the sevicing of the bikes when they were new no Harley oil has been used in the engines. One of the bikes has nearly 120,000 miles on it. None have suffered engine wear problems or consume oil. Main oil used Millers 20/50 Semi-synthetic.

Thumbs up Re: Oil

thanx for your replies.
I am relatively new to HD and have always serviced my own bikes i believe this makes biking for me more of an interest.

My 08 Fatboy cost me big bucks so I want to make sure that im putting a good lube in that wont damage stuff like roller bearings. Im not looking at cheap some thing better than mineral thats unless its highly recomended.

But it needs to be available without having to trundall miles to get to the nearest HD shop and I need to feel confident that my expensive investment is well looked after.

Hope all had a good xmas and a Happy new year to you all.

Re: Oil

Just to buck the trend I have generally used H-D oil exclusively with a couple of exceptions over the last 21 years.
I've always found the price competitive and the product satisfactory for what I need.

I used H-D 360 and it predecessors but in the last two years have changed to Synth3 in the motors with only on my Sportster still on 360 but that will be on Synth3 from the next change.

I have got my oil mostly mail order since 2005 from either Guernsey or Jersey H-D, postage paid and an equivalent saving of 15% on UK list so still works out very competitive.

My only real advice would be to use the correct grade quality oil made for use specifically in a four stroke air cooled motor and change it regularly regardless of whether it has done the required miles.

Oh goody, another oil thread...

Stephen, welcome to the forum. You will find a lot of free advice here, mostly of sound quality, like this from SJC:

That, my friend, is all you ever need to know about oil in a Harley. But I expect someone will come along in a minute or so and tell you to use Tesco Value Motor Oil.

Re: Oil

Service done today with HD360 they would not recomend anything else.must admit oil is what you are comfortable with and as long as its change regualary it should be fine,BUT i read to much and in my mind is 08 models run very oil and synthetics are better with heat but the dealer recons hd360 is fine. when i start servicing myself after the warrenty runs out i'm sure i could find a better synthetic for the price not that price is the issue.
