Motorcycle driving license

I wonder if anyone can tell me. whats the go with a new motorcycle license.
its been a while and im sure it far different from when i did it. the bit of interest is how long after you pass your test do you have to wait until you get a bigger bike? and what size bike can you go to immediately after taking part 2 of the test?
all answers gratefully recieved

Re: Motorcycle driving license

Well if your under 21 you have to take ur test on a bike with 33bhp or less and after two year you can ride what ever you want. If your over 21 you take your full liecense on a bike with more than 33 bhp and you are then able to ride what ever you like.

They our at the stage of bringing in a new test to come in line with europe but they are having a few problems because some of the test now need to be done off road because you need to do a emergency stop at 50Km which is MPH is 31 and we can't do that on any of our roads because you can't practise a emergency on a road more than 30mph and if you are doing 31 you our speeding.
The other part of the test is just road riding and you will be expected to do a u turn.

Hope this helped you

DVLA is a good place to start, followed by DSA.

Re: Motorcycle driving license

Has the law changed then ? I'm well over 21 and passed my direct access course last year which entitled me to ride unlimited capacity bike . . but if I'd have done the ordinary test, then I would have had to wait the two years or ridden a Harley with a limiter on it (restricted to 33bhp)

You also need to be aware not to get caught speeding etc . . if you get 6 points on your licence within the two years of having passed your test, then they take it away and you have to re-sit everything again

The U turn is done during module 1, which is the off road part.
Module 2 is the on road part of the test = 35minutes min and a few stops along the way.
You can`t do module 2 untill you pass module 1 which must be on the same bike category.
Hope that helps.

Think you may find that is only to a new rider or car driver licence holder. ie if you have had a car licence for a number of years and you get 6 points on the bike you don't loose your licence for bike and car you are still on the 12 points topping up. Plus it is not a ban anyway just a resit.
How long have you had a car licence?

From another thread:

RobK, tempting but that would surely be two offences?

Re: Motorcycle driving license

there's a article in this weeks MCN on license renewal and not getting the right license back
its worth reading and a little frighting .
it seams that the SWANSEA is not recognizing the bike part of your license ???
and it seams by the right up don't want to rectify there mistake
if your licence is up for renewal make sure you have a photo copy of your original licence

Cheers BaZa, I thought it seemed a bit harsh, but it's not very well explained, as theoretically, you have a new category on your existing licence. I've been trying really hard to slow down and not get any speeding points, so at least I'll be able to relax a bit more now . . . not that I'm going to change my current riding style of course (actually doing the Advanced Riding course now, and IAM's stance is they won't let you take the advanced exam if you have 6 points)
