Exclamation Updated post # 32: Wheels Rusting from inside. Safety Check!

Seen by most of you now but to any newbies:

We have had 2 examples in the last two months of laced wheels cracking and luckily neither of us came to a sticky end.

From crumboy first thread here

and second one from me here

also seen on a USA site

So make sure whenever you have a tyre changed the inside rubber is removed and the interior of the wheel is cleaned rubbed down and primed with anti-rust!

This is the inside of mine, 6 years old 60k rear wheel off a Road King. I must of been on my 8th tyre at least so there was no excuse not to see it deteriorate like this.

This is a very good recommendation from our club member Phil a H-D Service Director at a USA dealership:

Cheap is what cheap is with a tyre change bill. Insist that those steps are taken.
As rear tyres are changes at between six & ten thousand miles, it is an important safety check. It doesn`t take away from the fact that the wheels are crap, but may give somebody an early warning.

It looks like Baz`s wheel went at the weld.

Re: Wheels Rusting from inside. Safety Check!

Is that why you put the Fatboy wheel in, BaZa?

Last time I had a new rear tyre, the dealer (independent, but a good one) mentioned the rim was getting a bit corroded. I've been worrying since that I may have to swallow hard and fork out for a new wheel next time I get a tyre - if I can afford it, if not, the bike'll be off the road.

Anyone got any idea roughly how much a replacement wheel would cost? The bike's a '99 Superglidde Sport.

Re: Wheels Rusting from inside. Safety Check!

99 RK wheel cost me Ł290 from Jersey.
Local dealer quoted Ł450.

My hub was shot but if it was just the rim I'd have a stainless one from Devon Wheel Co fitted.

Re: Wheels Rusting from inside. Safety Check!

Thanks Dave; I like the idea of a stainless rim, but by the time it's been laced up it could well be as bad as (if not worse than) the cost of a whole new wheel. Better in the long run, granted, but my usual state is potless, so probably a non-starter.

Just have to save up and hope I can find a good deal if and when the time comes. Used ones seem to be like hen's teeth, if ebay's owt to go by. Never found a wheel for my bike on there yet.

Maybe a(nother) reason to join up so I can access the small ads on here

The price from Devon is in above link.
Watch out for off set and bearing type if buying S/H.
I now have a spare pair of rims to keep me going,my original and a spare on a wheel I bought from a pi$$ head that didn't know what year his swinging arm was.Think the only things '99 on it were the log book and the oil.

Now then, that's buggered me cos I'd have no idea how to tell (don't even know what off-set means).

Safest option seems to be to save for a new 'un, unless I'm totally sure about the person I'm buying from.

Have just pre-warned the lovely Mrs Shifty so she'll know why I'm being even tighter than usual for a while.
