There are those that say don't do it but I like to carry a can of fuel and run out once so you have an idea of how many miles you can do if you have not got a fuel left countdown (it may be not many miles or quite a few, you will then have a rough idea). Just be prepared that the motor will cut out at some point and stop as soon as it splutters, don't push it any further than that. |

Peter not many of us rely on the petrol gauge or any low petrol lights, so the best thing many of us do is to work out how many miles per gallon you do from full tank to nearly empty and fill up again and work it out. On my 1450 carbed Road King I usually start looking for a petrol station at 140 ish miles and by that time I fancy a ciggie and a coffee anyway. ![]() Hope this helps. And welcome to the website maybe you want to say hello here for a few welcomes from around the country and even your local area if you say where you are from. ![]() Quote:

| Re: running out of fuel
This has become a hot topic in recent years, especially as Harleys are all EFI now and have a mix of idiot lights and gauges, but no reserve fuel tap. Occupies an amazing amount of forum time in the USA! While you are using your bike locally record mileage over a few tanksful from full to light coming on, to get an idea of sensible range. You know your theoretical tank capacity, so after a few fills you should have a good idea of the remaining fuel in the tank when the light comes on. It is not uncommon on touring models for that to be around a gallon. Depending on where I am travelling, and especially in unknown areas when on holiday, I start looking shortly after the half a tank mark. On extended trips you are likely to get slightly better range than when closer to home. |
