It's gorgeous country to be sure. But don't let them fool you, those Amish are more developed then you may have heard. The Mrs and I went there two years ago while also visiting Gettysburg PA battlefields. Loved Gettysburg, hated Amish country. How can you say you're living the life of "plain people", yet have websites, cell phones (yes, I swear to you, the driver of our Amish wagon, a self proclaimed Amish person, had a cell phone with them, and was using it), and other amenities of the "English" lifestyle and not be "modern". It seemed like such a bogus tale, that it immediately made the Mrs want to leave. To this day, if you want to get her on a good rant, ask her how much she "Loved" the Amish people. Funny thing is... she was the one that wanted to do the Amish end of the trip, for me, it was the Gettysburg part. I'm a history fanatic, so I was loving just being there. She wanted to see the "quaint life" of the Amish, and her bubble was totally burst. I've since heard there are rides to Gettysburg, and I'm looking into that. May not be for a couple of years for me... as it would include a lot of highway traveling to get there and I'm just not that comfortable on the highway's yet. But once I've got it mastered, I'd enjoy a ride down there. Beautiful country backroads to explore. Lot's of small winding lanes. Just a matter of "getting there" first. Amish land also has tons of backroads to explore... you just have to watch out for the horses (and their droppings) on the roadways. |
