To flush or not to flush

Can anyone recommend a flushing oil or indeed is it usually neccessary after draining oil.

Re: To flush or not to flush

From my experience I would say that it's not necessary these days.
Just use a modern oil that's suitable for a Harley and change it and the filter regularly.
But I have no doubt that someone else will say yes.

Re: To flush or not to flush

The only time i ever flushed after an Oil change was on my 78 bonnie (in er 79) anyway oil light came on after i had put new oil in, and i had managed to get tiny mettle filings in the oil pump which had to be stripped and blown out and put back etc etc > personally as far as I am aware the stealer's don't flush so i don't. Like the man says change the oil and filter regularly and it should be fine.

Re: To flush or not to flush

I only use it in conjunction with older machines using straight grade oils, or racing engines using R; it's definitely a bad idea to leave R in an engine for long periods unattended

I've never used it with modern machinery. No 1 Son has a Suzuki, works in a mainstream dealership and did his time as an apprentice in the workshop, and he doesn't use it at all.

Re: To flush or not to flush

Depends which model Harley you've got.

I don't know about the newer ones but most older Harleys retain a certain amount of oil somewhere when drained - e.g. either in the oil lines, bottom of the oil tank or the crankcase.

So unless you can guarantee you've got it all out, you might have a pint or so of flushing oil going round in your engine for the next six thousand miles. Dunno what effect this might have.

Wouldn't bother meself, just change oil and filter regularly.

Re: To flush or not to flush

The twin cam and shovel get a change and a new filter each time, the Brits appear to be running total loss so they get a top up !!
