From todays Peterborough Evening Telegraph Stealthy way to catch the rogue bikers A POLICE operation to crack down on the number of motorbike deaths is being relaunched in Lincolnshire. Operation Stealth, a joint partnership between Lincolnshire Police and Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership, aims to reduce the number of casualties by targeting the small section of the biking community who refuse to ride safely and responsibly, and use the county’s roads as racetracks. Twelve roads within Lincolnshire have been identified as having a significant problem with bikers travelling at high speeds. During the forthcoming biking season, enforcement will be stepped up on these routes with the aim to robustly police them using marked and unmarked vehicles. Last year, as part of Operation Stealth, which ran from April to October, the number of motorbike deaths and injuries reduced by 45 per cent as compared to the same period the previous year, when Stealth was not in place. Assistant Chief Constable Peter Davies said: “We don’t want Stealth to alienate the biking community, who are largely responsible riders who use the roads safely. “We’re not aiming to catch bikers out, but we want to make them think carefully about their speed and riding, and the potential consequences of behaving irresponsibly.” “We need to get the message across that we simply won’t tolerate excessive and dangerous speeds and anti-social behaviour on our roads and will clamp down on those bikers who use them recklessly, with no regard for their safety or that of others. |
