| Beware of police hardline approach
Just got a NIP's today for an offence commited last Thursday at Asgawby on the A17 whilst on my way to Boston Bike night on my Fatboy. I saw the van sitting there all lonely by the egg farm so shouldn't be suprised to receive this notice.....if i had been speeding but the notice wasn't for that nor was it for careless or reckless riding, wouldn't of minded if it was just for being a Harley rider, no is was for ...............................wait for it......................... Having the numbers and letters of the number plate on the same horizonal line, which is different to having a small number plate or one of different fonts. It beggers belief that an organisation that sets itself up as being only concerned of safety on Lincolnshires roads and has displays at all the big lincolnshires bike nights think its in the best interests to the public to send a NIP for what is a legal plate on any car, lorry, tractor and most other vehicles except Motorcycles and mopeds. (and its the first I knew of it). I've since spoken to the LRSP who's answer is "that is the law which must be obeyed" Well Lincolnshire Road satety partnership please keep your DVD's and colouring books as I now know where the money has come from. |

I'm not sure where in the regulations that says you cannot have a plate that has the numbers and letters on a horizontal line is there is nothing here www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/v796.pdf If you plate is legal in all other aspects then maybe you should do some research - what bit of legislation are they saying you have broken ?

According to the NIP its: "Use a motorcycle on the road fitted with a single row number plate. Contrary to regulation 13, schedule 3 road vehicles (Display of registration marks) Regulations 2001. |

Strange that the reason given for requiring No. Plates of a certain format etc. is so that the cameras can read the No. plate. However did they manage to find you? |

| Re: Beware of police hardline approach
From the DVLA website, booklet ref INF104 There are separate provisions for motorcycles and tricycles. This means, motorcycles registered from 1 September 2001 must only display a number plate at the rear of the vehicle. Motorcycles registered before 1 September 2001 can display a number plate at the front, but do not have to. The number plate must be a “2-line” number plate and must be displayed on all motorcycles registered on or after 1 January 1973. Sorry guys.

Looks like it's in "All number plates including numbers those purchased through's sales scheme must be displayed in accordance with The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 (obtainable from Her Majesty's Stationery Office)." I also found a fuller version of the description re the plates themselves. Motorcycles registered on or after 1 September 2001 must display a two-line number plate number plate. Motorcycles registered prior to the 1 September 2001 may display a three-line plate, but one-line plates are illegal, irrespective of the date of registration of the motorcycle.
