It's only just over 1000 miles to Venice. The ferry from there is an overnighter to Patras and sails right down the Grand Canal. On the reutrn you get back to Venice at the crack of dawn - the most excellent time to view the city.

Going to Ancona to catch the ferry is only just over 1100 miles.
