Heated Grips

Just wanted let everyone know about the heated grips i just put on the Ully, highly recomended to anyone who rides all year round and doesnt want to spend £200 on Harley ones or waste there money on the pants oxford ones and the like.

They are made by a US company called Symtec, used to be only available from the US (got mine from California Sport touring Motorcycle Accessories from California Sport Touring, Inc.: Symtec Motorcycle Grip Heater Kit w/round rocker switch )
but someone is now selling them in the UK (Motorcycle Tank Bags, Luggage, Panniers, Tail Bags, Seat Bags, Enduro Bags, for Aprilia, Benelli, BMW, Buell, Cagiva, Ducati, Honda, Kawasaki, Moto Guzzi, MV Agusta, Suzuki, Triumph, Yamaha, Off Road, Enduro motorcycles)

Anyway the best bit about them is they are not actually a set of grips, just the heating element and the asscoiated wiring, you take your existing grips off, clean the bars, peal the super sticky backing of stick the elements directly to your bars/throttle tube and then put your grips over the top. This means you can run custom grips and still have warm hands in the winter, also means that they are extremly discreet and dont spoil the look of the bars etc.
Heres a pic of the kit

They have two settings Low and high and having now used them for the last couple of days (just to test them out) they are fantastic, i have had a few bikes with factory fitted heated grips including a BMW GS which apparently has the best heated grips possible and IMO these are as good if not better than the BMW ones, and definetly better than any other grips i have tried over the years (oxford etc)

The kit comes with either a toggle switch whitch IMO looks pants or a nice neat little black rocker switch so make sure if you do get some to get the correct switch, piece of pee to fit and come with everything you need including all terminals, cable ties etc etc etc.

Highly recomended!

Re: Heated Grips

Cheers Neil - at £37 they've got to be worth a try......

The main problem I have in winter is cold, throbbing fingers I have to stop every half-hour or so and hold my hands on the engine to thaw out

Question Re: Heated Grips

Hi- Can you let me know if the wiring protrudes out of the side ?
I bought some of the Symtec Harley in-bar heater kits but found this would not work with my kellerman bar-end indicators and have since sold them off on ebay.
My bars are internally wired and symtec suggest that you need a loop of wire to allow for throttle movement.
Does the kit you suggest on the throttle side fit on top of the plastic but under the grip ?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Re: Heated Grips

There is wires that come out of them at the switch side though so shouldnt interfear with your bar end indicators, i left a small amount of loose cabe to allow for throttle movement and its fine.

The heat element attaches to the throttle tube itself, you then just slide the grip over it or if your throttle tube is part of the grip just attach it directly onto the bar.

a few months on I still love mine and would highly recomend them

Question Re: Heated Grips

Thanks for your reply
Is there any chance you could post a photo showing the wire that protrudes ?
and do you think they'll work if internally wired ?
Cheers

Re: Heated Grips

Hi Neil, dunno how old this thread is but over the weekend I was going to fit a similar kit for one of the lads but came to a halt. I wasnt quite sure on the idea of sticking the heater directly to the bar then having the throttle tube chaffing back and forth across it. I held fire on the job and was going to ask here today to find out if all Harleys had the one piece tube/grip or is there a tube that allows for aftermarket grips to be fitted. Id even considered turning down the Harley one piece grip to allow a rubber grip to be fitted having wrapped heater element around it.
PS the bike in question is an FXR if it makes any difference

Kev, the kit that i have used many times is intended to be fitted to the bar directly on the clutch and to a throttle tube on the other, i dont see why you couldnt again fir to the bar directly but i would be concerned about the constant rubbing of the throttle against it.

You can buy standard 1" plastic throttle tubes then fit the slip on grips of your choice but most Harley grips i believe are of the one piece design.

Re: Heated Grips

I was thinking about a pair of heated gloves or muffs.

Re: Heated Grips

Thanks for that, fellows: mine is indeed the 'bike in question. This site was recommended to me by an enduro-riding mate, grip-heaters now available for £25 all in, at heated grips enduro engineering - but I hadn't checked the throttle set-up on the fxrs. So I'm relying on Kev's engineering skills and any further helpful advice. Cheers.
