Your throttle and clutch cables are Bowden cables, old chap, named after the British Colonel of that name who supposedly invented them. I think he had aircraft of the WW1 era in mind, but it didn't take long for British cycle makers to adopt them, or Wikipedia to refute my modest recall of their history!
