Bikers may face seaside crackdown

Bikers may face seaside crackdown

Bikers park on the prom at weekends and during bank holidays

Motorcyclists could face a parking crackdown on Aberystwyth promenade under a new proposal.
Cars have faced parking restrictions for years but a blind eye has been turned to motorcyclists, who are seen as boosting the tourist trade.
But Aberystwyth Promenade Forum, made up of council and local groups, says the no parking rule must be obeyed.
Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) has been in talks and hopes to resolve the issues and stop bikers going elsewhere.
Dozens of bikers use the promenade at weekends and over bank holidays.
It is thought they bring benefits to the town's tourist trade.
No parking
But Aberystwyth Promenade Forum, which includes the town council, Ceredigion council and private and voluntary groups, said the situation had to alter.
On behalf of the forum, a Ceredigion Council spokesman said: "The forum has been actively studying the issues surrounding the parking of motorbikes on Aberystwyth's north promenade.
"There has been a weight of opinion within the forum that the policy of no parking of motor vehicles on Aberystwyth's promenade should be adhered to and, at the same time, a feeling that a compromise solution would be best given that bikers bring much needed tourist trade to the town."
The forum has been in talks with the national Motorcycle Action Group (MAG), which promotes the views of motorcyclists.
"Though supportive of its members parking on Aberystwyth's promenade, MAG does appear to be eager to reach agreement on a way forward," added the spokesman.
Rory Wilson of MAG said a ban would result in riders going elsewhere.
He added: "As compared to the number of designated car parking spaces in the town, those provided for motorcycles are minimal.
"We understand that there are health and safety concerns relating to the motorcycles parking on the promenade. Aberystwyth and district MAG would be pleased to work with Ceredigion County Council to help resolve these issues.

Re: Bikers may face seaside crackdown

This is becoming a typical scenario, with motorcycles being charged parking in London it seems to be another way to earn money,

“but at what cost to the local community!!”

I was booked for parking my bike on a pavement in St Albens a couple of weeks ago, "70quid 35" if payed within two weeks, it was parked next to a tree on a pavement that was as wide as a standard road!! I know I shouldn’t be parked there under normal circumstances but this was at 9.30 at night!!

Apparently the traffic wardens now work until 10pm, I learnt that the hard way, so from now on if I feel like going out for a meal I will not be heading there!!

Typical!!

For all their bitching about congestion, pollution and the general "end of the world as we know it", they're still picking on the biking community who cause the least amount of problems and add the most to tourism!

Same as with Matlock - they'll miss us when we've found somewhere nicer to go!

Re: Bikers may face seaside crackdown

this is just typical of aberystwyth , an absolute backward way of thinking . it's a true fact that our local council are only interested in there personal pockets and fancy 5 course meals at our expense . they charge for car parking in all but the super market carparks and supply very limited security type parking for bikes . i feel ashamed to have to admit that i have lived in aberystwyth for over 40 years !!! and for as long as i can remember there has allways been a healthy gathering of bikers/motorcyclists from all walks of life on the promenade on the weekends .
maybe a question to raise is one to the local police.... how much hassle/trouble do you get from the bikers/motorcyclists on the promenade mr pc policeman ???
a second question .... how much hassle/trouble do you get from drunks on the weekend mr pc policeman .???
a third question to the local council would be worded on the outcome of the above two questions , and would probably go something like ....
why then mr council official dude do you give out late night drinking license to several drinking establishments only to put strain on our local police force ??
THE POINT BEING WE ARE DOING NO F**KING HARM TO ANYONE

rant over .... Baz from aberystwyth

The thing is, we do no f*ckin harm, but we dress different to the droids and some of us have lots of tattoos on both arms and surely I should know different after 7 years at Uni and married to a medical consultant. Surely we are bad people if we look like - and ride those loud bikes. Forget the 4x4's that gridlock our streets as they are part of the cog that and the powers that be want. Essentially they want to control the masses so your part of their machine and dont like individuality as its a threat - to whom I dont really know. Thats why we keep to ourselves and do our own thing. Oh we even have a loving rottweiler too. (see I told you, him with the leather waistcoat with badges and patches on together with that dog surely is part of one of those gangs).Shove it!

IMHO, they can stick their rules up the arses and do what they do best in their masonic lodges and leave us alone.

Re: Bikers may face seaside crackdown

Up until a few years ago me and my wife would go over to Stratford upon Avon on a Sunday to see the bikes which parked next to the river / canal basin, next to the canal boats. The general public crowded around the bikes and loved walking up and down the parade of bikes of all types. We spent money on everything from Ice creams to McDonalds and then would cross the road and buy stuff in M & S etc. You get the idea.

Then the bright sparks, banned the bikes and moved them to a purpose built car park right away from the basin.

Result: I have never been back and I believe it killed the Sunday attraction. Nobody goes anymore.

The local traders are already complaining that trade is way down on previous years thanks to the new parking rules.

Admittedly I moved away from the area a while ago but Hilary and I stopped going for the same reasons as you.
