Visiting Scotland

Having a skulk around Region 1.

Pic taken last week of Allt Bail a'Mhuilinn just north of Loch Tay. Cruizin Glen Lyon tomorrow - can't wait.

Re: Visiting Scotland

A great day out exploring Glen Lyon yesterday.

My pic doesn't do justice to "the longest, loneliest & loveliest glen" in Scotland - must be the heat haze.

Friday, it's Loch Rannoch and Rannoch Station - that'll be another to cross off the bucket list.

Re: Visiting Scotland

You're in my country now...

We were up that way last night, and it was still light at 10.00 on the way home.

If you haven't done it, try and take the unclassified back of Schiehallion road to Kinloch Rannoch then to Rannoch Station. On the way back head towards Tummel Bridge, and take the first left towards Trinafour. This is one of my favourite roads, and is definitely best taken uphill, and slowly. You get incredible views from the top and as you approach Trinafour, take the (sharp!) turn to the right and you get the alternative straight road back down to Tummel.
The road from Trinafour to Bruar is great too. In fact, all the roads are great in Perthshire!

If you're in the area, the road from Pitlochry to Kirkmichael (and then on to Glenshee, Braemar, Tomintoul, etc.) over Moulin Moor is great. If you're travelling East, stop at the summit just to look back West to the mountains. if you're going West, you can't miss them. Edradour distillery up there too. The Moulin Inn on the outskirts of Pitlochry does good pub grub and has its own brewery

Watch out for sheep on all these roads, and deer at this time of year, especially dawn and dusk.

Here's a Google link to the Trinafour and Schiehallion roads, if you can access that? You're getting some decent weather at last.

Hi banquo,

We'll look after it - we're well behaved.

Many thanks for the routes. We're approaching Loch Rannoch tomorrow from Fortingall village, so we will take the road by Schiehallion and fit in Trinafour if we've time.

We move further north on Sunday to Newtonmore, so can catch the road from Pitlochry to Braemar then.

Sheep behaved yesterday, however, gravel was an issue, winter wash outs from the becks on the Loch Tay to Bridge of Balgie road.

Thanks again, John

Re: Visiting Scotland

Great run out today but never made it to Rannoch Station. Took the back of Schiehallion road to Kinloch Rannoch - yes, banquo a great run - and the darned petrol station shown on our map no longer exists - deceased.
So it was either Pitlochry or Aberfeldy for fuel. So went and had a look round Aberfeldy.

However, we did see an aeroplane in a field and stunning views everywhere.

A couple of lessons learnt today visiting Scotland - keep fuelled up and I really do need to tidy up my uphill left hand hairpins.

Re: Visiting Scotland

Aye, it pays to fill up every chance you get. Once you get futher North, it gets worse, much worse, I'm afraid. A lot of the rural stations closed, and the ones that are left shut early, and sometimes on Sundays.

Other roads if you get the chance:

Garve to Gairloch
Kyle of Lochalsh to Applecross, but only if you REALLY want to practice those hairpins.
Wester Ross, North out of Ullapool

Thanks banquo,

Will cruise those in about 6/7 weeks on our way down the west coast.

"North out of Ullapool" - do you mean the unclassified via the Summer Isles.
