Accomodation in Aberdeen

Hi

Can anyone help me. I am due to start a new job in Aberdeen (Dyce) in a few weeks time. Trouble is I live in Aylesbury (Buckinghamshire). So, are there any kind folks in Aberdeen who can help to put up a fellow biker. All I will need is a spare room and somewhere to park my bike.

If all goes well, I shall be doing a training course for a few months starting in December.

I can be contacted on sharp630@tiscali.co.uk

Thanks

Michael Sharp

Re: Accomodation in Aberdeen

Just a few important facts about Aberdeen.

!. It's F***ing expensive.
2. Getting a place rented or bought will cost an arm and a leg.
3. It can be a miserable bloody place.
4. The locals aint the warmest.
5. Best advice, rent somewhere about 30-40 miles away you will save a fortune
6. It's the Oil capital of Scotland
7. Don't ever try and get a B&B or a hotel room during the week

We are 65 miles away and if you are really stuck let me know. As a born and bred Aberdonian I know what a bitch the place can be...

But still have a few good mates there, so if you need help or advice let me know.

All the best, Bill.

Re: Accomodation in Aberdeen

this is a typical Aberdeen story! I've been going there sporadically for work reasons since the 'mad days' of the late 70s and have long since come to the conclusion that there are basically two approaches to the place....

1) buy somewhere during one of the oil industries' periodic slumps. The arse falls out of property prices and you can do well when it picks up again

2) don't go there at all. This is my preferred approach... I have just had a month in W Africa and 3 weeks in Tunisia so it's not much of a contest, really

on a serious note it's a chronic problem there, the industry is busy just now so people are being frantically recruited and pressured into moving into an inflated, unstable, one-employer property market. It's important to realise that the N Sea is in terminal decline, production in 2013 will be 30% of present levels. This is the last hoorah for Aberdeen and like a lot of people, I won't miss the place in the least. I can only agree with previous coments about the weather and the locals.....

I'm glad I didn't repond to the pressure in 1985..... or 1998...

Re: Accomodation in Aberdeen

Aberdeen is like every where else its what you make it.

Hotel rooms are now really expensive. B&Bs in the center of town the same.

If you can get somewhere initially to stay you will soon come across a place more to your liking.

But 45Brit I made a good living for years offshore from Aberdeen.

Re: Accomodation in Aberdeen

I know there are people who have spent their whole careers there, but it didn't do anything for me. I took the top dollar while it was there, working as a roughneck and derrickman in the 'mad days' but I soon moved on, and I've never felt any serious urge to go back.

Just had 3 weeks in a 5 star hotel in Tunisia as a Client Rep, 6 weeks in West Africa before that. Doesn't make you want to be in Aberdeen, I can tell you.

I spent the firts couple of weeks of the Rugby World Cup in Aberdeen, tied up at Waterloo Quay on some useless crap-barge of a survey boat, listening to all the anti-English sh1te from the people in the bar before going to West Africa for Total and watching the knockout stages on a laybarge with French client team, S African ships' officers and about a dozen Brits, and it was great crack.

Re: Accomodation in Aberdeen

Nope we ain't the warmest but if you had to put up with Weegies & Edinburgers telling you how great they are & how sh**e the rest of Scotland is you wouldn't be the warmest either.

Sorry 45Brit but you'll get anti - english sentiment & remarks throughout Scotland it ain't nice it ain't pretty & it ain't clever. I've suffered anti-jock comments in SE England. One wrong don't make a right - what I'm trying to say is that you get small minded ignorant people all over the world.

Friendly Total staff & nice South Africans, man can I get some of whatever you were on in West Africa????
