| John Davey Just heard today, John Davey, died last Wednesday. John was the owner of The Harley Shop in Castleford from the 70's until 1999. I bought a Harley off John in 1992, the first new bike I ever bought - he thought I'd bought it as a fashion accessory and it took two years before he'd talk to me as a 'serious' owner. A true one-off. Last edited by Roger; 18-07-2006 at 08:22 AM. |

| Re: John Davey I knew John in the early 80's when his shop was a converted corner shop in Harehills in Leeds. Used to go for a social with him and a couple of other owners, mainly beer, but sometimes food, at an american diner in Leeds called Ikes, (no longer there) When I got married the first time, I had to have a clear-out and I gave my 100 or so copies of Easyriders to his shop in Whitwood for riders to read. Haven't seen him for years, but now he's gone, I'll miss him.

| Re: John Davey John worked at Fred Warr's in the early seventies and we rode together a fair bit. Ran into him at rallies since and we've talked shite about nowt. He always was a tetchy bugger and I bet he still is. Probably telling Gabriel exactly how it ought to be done. Ride on Mate.

| Re: John Davey John was my first experience of a Harley "dealership"; this was in 1989, when Harleys were still relatively rare compared to today. As Gray says, he'd never win any awards for customer relations (although he certainly knew his stuff) and was notorious for being abrupt, if not downright rude! In fact it was said that only his dogs (one was a bloody great big mastiff I think) were less friendly than John was. I went in there during Shipley 1989; having had my Sporty nicked a few weeks previously, I was in the market for a replacement. John had a tidy mid-70's Ironhead in the shop, about £3500 if I remember rightly; this was at a time whwen virtually ANYTHING with an H-D badge sold for very silly money, the H-D ball had started to roll but bikes were somewhat scarce. Casually asked John what the price would be for cash (like you do) and was bluntly told, "F***in' price is on t'ticket!". Walked out, never went back (till some years later when Heidi had the shop on her own) and it wasn't till a some time later I found out that, by John's standards, he'd been quite civil actually! Saddened to hear of his death though; he was very much part of the Club's history, and a good supporter. RIP John; my condolences to Heidi and the family.
