Monday, May 18, 2009,

The Rev William Shergold, better known to his biker acolytes as Father Bill, or Farv, one of the founders of the 59 Club, home to rockers in the 1960s, has died in Wells at the age of 90.
He had lived in Southover in Wells since 1999.
Bill was ordained in Poplar, east London, in 1942 during the Blitz and, by the time the club was founded in 1959, he had been riding motorcycles for many years, simply because they were a cheap and efficient way of getting round his parish.
He almost gave up motorcycling in the early 1950s because his parishioners would look down on him because he turned up to services with oily hands and a grubby clothes following roadside repairs on his unreliable steed.
But when his motorcycle got him across London on wet autumn night to the bedside of a seriously ill child who was not expected to make it through the night, and he could comfort the family, he changed his mind.

Re: The 59n Club Paddindton: Tributes pour in for 'Father Bill'

This is history in the passing....

Im sure it was at last years Ace Cafe Rockers Reunion / Brighton Burn was the first time the Rev missed blessing the riders.

Im sure the stand-in Minister mentioned that the Rev had been reassigned and couldnt make the meet, may be he was just too worn out.

But I could be wrong....

Sad news all the same...
