| Re: Rip HDRCGB New Forest Rider: John Jenkins Party time to celebrate life of popular Dorchester shopkeeper 7:00am Wednesday 28th October 2009 A PARTY will be held in honour of a community-spirited shopkeeper who died before he had the chance to host his own bash for neighbours. The fund-raising event to remember popular Dorchester resident John Jenkins will raise money for a cause close to his heart. Widower Mr Jenkins was found dead in the flat above his Monmouth Road shop last month. He is believed to have shot himself. He passed away before he was able to host a street party for the local community to celebrate the conversion of his shop. And now friends and neighbours have stepped in to host a substitute celebration in Mr Jenkins’s name. The party, to be held at Dorchester Football Club, will give friends and neighbours of the shop owner the chance to share their memories of Mr Jenkins. Cash from the November 6 event will raise money for children in Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. Mr Jenkins’s niece Nicola Hanmore, 26, of Poole, said: “Uncle John’s own children didn’t live long and I expect he would have liked the idea of helping other children. “The party is a really lovely idea and I hope that a lot of people turn up to share their memories of John. “His funeral was very sad but was as lovely as a funeral could be and this is a chance for people from the Dorchester area to remember John.” Mr Jenkins’s wife Tracey and the couple’s sons John, 2, and six-week-old Steven, were killed on the A35 on December 14, 1992 in a head-on collision. The evening, which is being co-organised by Dorchester mayor Susie Hosford, will bring back some bittersweet memories for people who went to Mr Jenkins’s 40th birthday party, also held at Dorchester FC. Ms Hosford, a former neighbour of Mr Jenkins, said: “So many people have been so saddened by the loss of John that this will be an opportunity for people from this area to remember him. “His funeral was held in Bournemouth, so this is a chance for Dorchester people who knew him to come together for a fun evening and to raise money while remembering John.” Anyone who knew the Harley-Davidson lover and wishes to attend the party on Friday, November 6 is asked to bring a plate of buffet food to contribute to refreshments. A raffle and collection for Great Ormond Street will be held on the evening. Call Ms Hosford on 01305 880102 for further details. For those who may be interested..
