Ride for Life 2007

Hey up guys'n'gals Help, Guidance, Advice needed on this please !!!!

Due to work commitments & other stuff Essjay has handed this over to me this year and my thoughts have been elsewhere recently after losing Maggie so nothing has been sorted on this Plus I'm starting to hit my "silly" season for work so I could do with a hand.

First off, do we want to do this again ? Number of riders and amount raised was down last year from the first year! Although we did raise over two grand and those who did take part did so with great spirit & enthusiasm for which we were grateful

If we are prepared to do it again do we..................

Keep the same wet weekend which clashes with the BMF at Peterborough 19/20 May ?

Move it to another date and hope it stays dry LOL !!!

If we move it to another date it would obviously clash with another rally !

I did think that maybe instead of JOG to LE we could maybe do JOG & LE and meet up at a rally that's pretty central and party on. My only concern with this was would the ride for lifers p1ss the other rally goers off who don't agree / don't want to take part in the ride? Or would it attract more riders maybe for the last legs ??

The only weekends that are rally free are 10-12 August, but that's Mikes farm party so that's out. the following weekend 17-19 August which is the weekend before the National at Oswestry or maybe the weekend after that, 31 Aug to 2nd September ??? The main problem also with these dates are that they are during School holidays & the roads will be much busier !

I don't mind sorting out the routes again like I did for the last two years with some good advice from riders in certain areas. But it's the collecting of sponsorship and distributing badges that Essjay did along with other stuff I could do with the help with.

Let me know what you think and we'll maybe start things rolling for this.

Cheers

Kendo

Re: Ride for Life 2007

I second all that Kendo has said! to be fair I can help out a bit but I am off to the Superrally and will be gone a week so a date change would suit me.
Ideas? we have done both end to ends so a change would be welcome, but what?
bear in mind that we ought to involve as many regions as possible and that raising money and having fun is the objective, We could have a mega region run to Perrys in August and the best region turnout could have a certificate or something (this is a ploy to up the numbers at Perrys ) or a central meeting point from designated areas, so workable ideas please!
If Kendo & myself with help from you guy's organise this then I propose that we stick to the same charity, (the GNHCT) but if someone else wants to organise a run for another charity then I have no problem with that either, as long as it's a Club project it's cool!
C'mon think of what we can do!

Re: Ride for Life 2007

I'm willing to help with badge distribution etc.
Couldn't do last year as it clashed with our first rally in region 17 but loved being part of 2005 RFL.
What we could do instead of LE - JOG is to a complete round the regions so that there is a meeting point for every region. So I could meet either Essex, Coasters or London. Less miles for everyone but possibly more involvement.

Just a thought.

Re: Ride for Life 2007

well how about each region rides its borders ie plans a route that takes them as near as possible around their entire region, in a lot of cases this could be a challenging ride, covering quite an area, all on the same day, all in all it would produce a mileage of several thousand covered in one day, surely making it a sponsorable event.
just an idea

Hi Dave,

You no I am wanting to do something this year for NSPCC. I would be happy to try and tie this in somehow. I would like to do some sort of tour, maybe with a rally or two, (Farm Party (Mike was cool with this) squeezed in?

Why not tie it in with the National Rally at Oz
Would gain more status at a national event

That sounds like a good idea to me. I think charity should be a big part of this club. Have some buckets made up for each region as we all know stopping of for fuel and such like atracts alot of intrest if we explain it for charity im sure we could collect a few quid that way. Depending on what charity we are collecting for, invite a member from that charity to the International and present the money that way. Invite the local papers, it can only extend the Riders clubs profile in a good way with some free advertising.

Re: Ride for Life 2007

It just doesn't have the same kind of impact does it? Tell a sponsor you're part of a LEtoJOG ride and it gets their attention. Tell them you're going to "ride around the area a bit, then go and meet some people in a field" doesn't sound like it'd have the same impact, does it?

What about the people who can't buy day tickets/weren't going to Os? Will they be allowed onto the site?

Time's marching on and we have routes that have been refined over the last couple of rides, what's wrong with what we did before?
You don't have to change just for change's sake.
Numbers were down on the previous year but I wonder how much of that was due to the weather.
Change the emphasis or nature of the ride and you could lose even more.

Re: Ride for Life 2007

What about an Iron Butt SS1000 End to End Gold? 1000 miles on a dog legged End to End route in under 24 hours

http://www.ironbuttuk.org/index.html

End to End News

Roger Allen has become the first finisher of the Iron Butt Association's End to End ride in the United Kingdom! leaving John O'Groats on the northern side of Scotland at 6.00am he rode to Lands End on the extreame southwest tip of England in less than 24 hours. Most people would find that ride to be very difficult (in hundreds of enquiries we could not find anyone that had docemented the ride in one day). But a straight shot was not what Allen had in mind, he wanted the IBA End to End GOLD, which meant a lengthy trek east to get the mileage above 1,000 before reaching Lands End

1,079 odeometer miles and 1,049 GPS miles to be exact in less than 24 hours

Roger, a Bunburner GOLD finisher on his HarleyDavidson Ultra Classic (so he knows what a HARD ride is) called this one "a tough ride". The first 100 miles out of John O'Groats had him facing 40 feet visibility trying to ride through a heavy cean mist on mountain roads, as if that wasnt enough, as he neared Lands End, a heavy rain added to the challenge, but as an experienced long dstance rider Roger knew a slow, but safe pace would bring him in and he made sure he stayed consistent and rode a very safe pace into the finish

What an exciting year this is turning out to be

President
Iron Butt Association of America
