Re: Motorcycycle/Car Impounded.

According to the latest figures police have carried out 30 million checks this year, and seized 120,000 vehicles. There are a number of reasons for vehicles being uninsured, but a large proportion are criminal elements and vehicles that are unsafe.

I for one have moaned that something should be done to remove uninsured vehicles from the road, ever been hit by one? Well now something has been done

To limit the chance of getting picked up for no insurance, (and while they have you any other misdemeanour's)
  1. As Bazza originally stated, check at ASKMID, (somebody should send this to the Quinn' for the other 2/3s of the membership).
  2. Renew in good time, so the database is updated prior to the expiry of the current certificate.
  3. Carry your insurance certificate with you until the database is updated.
And why do the impound vehicles? If they show up as being uninsured, it is very likely that they aren't. Would we rather they let them drive off?

Oh and another thing, remember SORN, bit of a b@stard as far as I'm concerned, but according to What Car November 2007
Quote:
Government ministers are drawing up plans to enable authorities to seize cars from uninsured motorists.

From April 2009, new powers will make it possible for cars to be confiscated as soon as their insurance lapses, unless their owners take them off the road.

The Motor Insurers' Database will be cross-referenced with information held by the DVLA, and, if drivers have let their insurance lapse and not taken them off the road, a £100 fine will be issued.

If the fine goes unpaid, the car will be seized.

The move is the latest proposal to tackle the big problem of uninsured drivers.

It is thought that around 5.7% of motorists - about two million people - drive without insurance.

Re: Motorcycycle/Car Impounded.

Has any one else had trouble with multi bike policies?

I can tax my Harley on line as it is the main bike on the policy, but I have to go to the Post Office to tax my Triumph and Honda as the Database does not recognise multi bike policies, or so I have been informed by my insurers.
Wifey has the same problem but we are with the same insurers.

Re: Motorcycycle/Car Impounded.

Good idea maybe, until some one screws it up. I've rang my insurers 3 times and wrote a letter, still not listed. It's underwritten by Axa, as yet I'm unable to find the right contact for them or MID. My other bikes with the same insurers are on it. As LLew says once they have pulled you they're going to be looking at pipes and plates etc.

I tax all three of my bikes on line with no probs, multi-bike policy via Motorcycle direct, sounds like a lame excuse to me by the insurance company

Niice theory but a complete cock up in practice. The car owner had paid their insurance in full over a month earlier. As for carrying your certificate with you forget it. It is not proof that you are insured. You could have cancelled the policy. The present police policy is that you are not insured if you are not on the database. I too am anti uninsured vehicles being on the road but this is not the answer.

AXA UK (EC2N1AD) Includes Sun Life etc 020 7920 5900

AXA Insurance (EC3N 1RE) 020 7702 3109

MID can't find post code which I'd need to track the buggers.

MIIC (Motor insurers information centre) a trade body so prob not much help to people who pay their wage (US) 0845 165 2800.

Funny how DVLA don't have a phone line to rat on the insurers, like they do if someone down your street has an old car ,and you can keep reporting it dumped when it isn't.
Good luck.

I doubt its a complete cock up. Like all systems, rules, laws etc a lot depends on how it is put into practice. I suspect different forces will have different interpretations as always.
Regarding showing your certificate I can see how it could be cancelled, but then what is the point of a producer? So you take your papers along to station and they still are not going to believe you?
I know there are instances like you are stating, here is another Worthing man faces insurance trial - Worthing Today
and if it happens to you CRAP, but how often does that happen compared to say damage caused by uninsured drivers.

I guess something needs to be set up to make a claim against a company that fails to get you on the data base. Must be someone running a campaign.

Interpreted from the Data Protection Act 1998.-

Law Enforcement

Personal data held for the purpose of preventing or detecting crime, apprehending or prosecuting offenders, or assessing and collecting any tax or duty are exempt if disclosure would prejudice one of those purposes.

The exemption is not restricted to bodies such as the police or Inland Revenue. So, information about suspected fraud held by a bank or a social security officer could also be covered.
-my understanding is that this could/can include insurance companies.

Problem is what the authority's define "for the purpose of....." which in the view of many is very subjective & open to misinterpretation & misuse.
