I’ve known this for years, being in the car trade we always made sure the tyres we fitted were as new as possible,

The last time I was at Bazas house he had a rear tyre he bought for his bike, he got it cheap from someone, I told him then he was stupid to even think of using it, but like most people they just don’t understand,

I’ll say to you all now never buy a tyre from ebay especially the ones that are advertised as brand new and at half the current market price because they are old ones that have been removed from someone’s shelf which should have been destroyed, but instead they are being sold to people like Baza!!

Thanks for that Dave. Well worth knowing. Perhaps we can all help by spreading the word. I knew the dangers but did not know how to check the code. Hope it is the same systm here. Will check mine in daylight tomorrow.

This thread has certainly got to me. I've been going round checking every tyre I can....bit sad I know, but I found it interesting.

Luckily the Avons that I had fitted to my RK last October were only a couple of months old when fitted, my car tyres are ok as well, but the tyre company next door to me at work are selling part worns, and some are up to 15 years old. It's scary just thinking about what could happen...especially now I've been educated to the facts, and previously I hadn't given any of this a second thought.

So - errr, isn't there any law over here to prevent this sort of thing? You get nicked pdq for worn tires so why don't they protect you from dodgy old tires? Maybe they want us to peg it so the population doesn't increase too much, maybe I'm just too cynical

Hey Tee,
If they were using traffic to control population then the speed limit outside schools would be a minimum of 60 MPH, reducing population before is can breed, and making the average survivor smarter than the current generation. When I was a child we were taught that the road belongs to the cars, this is no longer true, now it belongs to any fool that wants to walk there, and it's always the drivers fault when some stupid gets run over.

Hmmm - not the sort of thing I can advocate, being a school teacher
My School is on a road with a 40 limit and we still have problems. I was really having a go at the fact that we're supposed to be protected for our own good against things like speeding bikes/cars and the possibility that we might injure ourselves while riding our bikes so we must have an MOT to make sure they're safe so why don't they [The Government] do something to protect us from the bloody lunatics that sell these tires?

That's a good point the mot tester only has to check the age of a tyre while he is checking it's condition ond if it's over say 6 years old it fails!!

If the markes have been removed or have not been stamped on in the first place it should also fail!!

Very logical and simple way to protect people, unfortunately they are also the very reasons why this would not be put into practise. Cynicism? afraid so.
