Re: Oswestry looking dubious - weave!!!

William of small stature,

Spoke to both Lindon and Foundry. Both want between £300 and £350 for doing the swing arm, (around 3 hours labour).

Given that Kev (he of jolly japes and good intent) has said that he will do the job with me, I've ordered the parts, which will be here in about a week.

Kev and I will start to tear down the back end of the bike Friday afternoon.
You're welcome to a cup of tea / beer if you're passing. Thanks for your help the other night. Appreciated.

TO be fair, there's about £170 worth of parts in there with VAT.

Glad you seem to have got an answer to your problem but sorry it is an expensive one. Did the symptoms suddenly appear or looking back had there been a problem for a while?.

Re: Oswestry looking dubious - weave!!!

Well now Kev and I have the back end off the bike and have examined the swing arm bearings (left hand side) and bushing & spacer (right hand side).

The bearings look in excellent condition (will replace anyway), but the bushing on the right hand side appears to have some wear and the spacer that it runs in has a ridge.

Kev says that from an engineering point of view the amount of movement would be unacceptable.

I have ordered a new bushing and spacer from Foundry. Should be here by Wednesday apparently.

Hoping that's the answer. we'll see.

Re: Oswestry looking dubious - weave!!!

Hi John

Also have a look at the following:
1) Steering Head bearings, while the bikes on the lift grab the forks and pull them back and forward if there is movement, if there is, strip and check bearings, replace if necessary, regrease and put back together with correct clearance. Another symptom is if you get a clonk when you hit a bump in the road.
2) Check front and back wheel alignment.
3) Check front wheel is correctly balanced and true.
4) Check your axle nuts are tight and correctly torqued, should be about 50ft/lbs from memory but check your manual.
5) Bearings will wear quickly if overtightened or not set properly so mileage may mean nothing.
6) Check you wheel/bearing spacers are the correct size.
7) Uneven wear/high spot on you tyres.

cheers

rich
