York - Cape Wrath, what route?

Hey Tartan Dudes

How proud are you of your country?

Me and some York riders are planing to get to Cape Wrath in the Summer. Any suggestions for nice riding routes, good camping etc? Any other tips - like how to avoid midges, like any stretches of road where a Sportster will run out of fueleo?

We want to take about a week there and back again so experience of how far we might need to travel per day will be helpful -yes I know just divide the total by 7!

Google maps suggests:

Edinburgh
Stirling
Callander
Killin
Rannoch Moor
Ballachulish
Fort William
Inverness
Alness
Loch Shin
Laxford Bridge
Achlyness
Gualin House
Durness

What do you think?

You should be ok up to Alness for fuel stops,Loch Shin is pretty remote as far as i can remember.Never been up to Durness but there wont be much up there.July,August prime Midgie time you wont escape themUse Avon skin so soft they dont like that as much as the normal brands.Good luck.

Re: York - Cape Wrath, what route?

Coming out of York puts you on the wrong side of the country so to speak!

If your heading up here the west coast route is the one to take on a bike,if your looking at a 7 day trip you'd best go slow cause it's really not that far to go,unless your going to do an Ian Wright
One of the best bit's of road is Inverness to Ullapool,it has it all if the weather is good ,but a death trap at night with the deer and lunatic truck driver's

What is the attraction with Cape Wrath?

Go there by all means, but if it was me I'd be back down the road to Ullapool, mid summer there is a big melting pot of all cultures, but all like minded, good times and travel
If you throw enough grog down your neck the midges wont go near!!

Re: York - Cape Wrath, what route?

Plenty hotel and camping at durness + unbelivable beaches.
You cannot actually ride the bike to Cape Wrath you have to get on a
mini bus at the junction of the Cape Wrath - Durness road(unless things have changed) The way to go is definatly up the west coast best riding and
scenery. Head for Kyle of lockhalsh and up the west coast from there.
