Re: 883 to 1200

Pre sporty injection (ESPFI) and the need of a fuel pack the job was:

Parts about £150 +
Bored barrels exchange £150 ? Plus
plus about 6 hours labour.

+ Vat.

Re: 883 to 1200

well I was wondering what parts are actually re-used, and what you do with the old stuff. The arithmetic seems ambiguous. If there is £1200 between the costs of the respective new bikes, and the normal cost of the conversion is £1550, you are better off buying a new 1200.

at the price you are paying, you have paid the difference. If you resell the barrels, pistons etc from the original bike, you are in pocket by that amount.

If you buy the parts for £750, fit them yourself, and sell the parts, you are well in pocket - but do you have to strip the engine and recut the cases for the new barrels? Are you really saying that the parts cost £750 and the rest is labour?

considering what you can get low-mileage secondhand 883 Sporties for with a bit of patience, I rather suspect that the best value would be buy one and convert that, and the best new value would be a new 1200 which seems to have considerably lower depreciation

Re: 883 to 1200

BaZa post is very interesting!!

is that all that is involved? Seems a lot of money if so.

what about the heads? is the combustion chamber volume the same? It is a well-known conversion with 250cc BSAs for grasstrack, you fit a 71mm Triumph piston and get about 325cc and the scrutineer will never spot it... plus the smaller chamber volume gives you at least one extra compression point ( typically from 9:1 to 10:1 )

Re: 883 to 1200

Disassembly 1200 conversion
Carburetor Upgrade 1200 conversion
Camshaft upgrade 1200 conversion
Determine Compression 1200 conversion
Re-assembling 1200 conversion
Road test and performance 1200 conversion
References and credits 1200 conversion

Parts but OTT not all necessary:

THIS is a good read.

This is pre injection though.

Re: 883 to 1200

Hmm, My local Indy just supplies and fits 1200 barrells and pistons, rejets the carbs to suit and hey ho away you go. Same cams (unless the customer supplkies some he wants fitting or asks for new 'uns).
He also claims (and I believe him for the reasons stated above) that the 883 heads give better performance.
The crankcases do not need boring out at all.

Re: 883 to 1200

The barrels and pistons they use don`t require the heads to be change.doing it this way you get a 1200 cheaper and with better performance i`ve been told, but i let you know once i`ve riden it a month or so.I had a VN1500 meanstreak which was very heavy and put a strain on my leg (i had a big off when i was younger)doing it this way i get a light bike which can keep up with the riders it may sound a bit mad but i did land on my head when i had my off

Re: 883 to 1200

Hi Bob
Didn't realise you were a new member til now so welcome to Region 12. The guys & girls here are very friendly and welcoming as i found out earlier this year. There is a meeting in Exeter tonight at Twisted Oak in Ide, a ride out to Sourton on 30th lunchtime and xmas party near Ashburton on Jan 12th.
Have read an article in an old American V testing an XXL 883 against XL1200 comes out pretty good if I remember right.
See you out on the road.
Iain

Re: 883 to 1200

If your old parts aren't taken in part exchange to reduce the cost, then I would make sure to pick them up as they may not be any use to you anymore but may help somebody else out in the future if they have problems or you could get a bit of cash back by selling them on ebay as there are always people out there looking for spares.
We don't call them 'Stealerships' for nothing!
