Re: 883 to 1200

Hi Bob
Be interested in what difference you find in the conversion. My wife has been toying with having her 883 converted. Apparently because of the gearing it is much better than a staged 1200. Look forward to your update.

Re: 883 to 1200

I don't fully understand the logic of this conversion. Why not just buy a 1200 in the first place? Is the cost difference that great? If the 883 gearing is lower than the 1200 gearing, which is what I take the reference to gearing to mean, why not fit 883 gearing to a 1200?

I assume a converted 883 is materially different in some way to justify the end cost, someone said a while ago that the different valve and port sizes were a factor. Certainly 45s are too big in the exhaust area, and increasing the inlet size relative to the exhaust improves scavenging overall - is this also true for Sportsters?

can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Re: 883 to 1200

my first EL panhead was much the sweetest and smoothest of the four Big twins I've had at various times, when I had the top end off for a general service it was found to be 87mm bore x 89mm stroke, 68ci or 1060cc near enough.

why, I don't know; I suspect it had been modified because it needed repair and the EL parts weren't available ( this was in about 1975 and it had probably started life as a Dutch or Belgian police bike, or possibly as a private import by a US serviceman. There was a scam, of sorts, by which US servicemen got their cars or bikes flown in by the US military, registered them in UK, sold them for more than they would get in US after 2 years, and claimed a payment in lieu of flying them back )

is this the case with Sportster conversions also?

Re: 883 to 1200

Its cheaper to buy a 883 and convert it to a 1200 the difference being about £1200 quid ,once i get it back and give it a few road tests i`ll let you know.

I also fail to see the value to what is in effect a huge rebore.
Do you get to keep your old barrells and pistons? Or does Phil Jessop get to keep those to resell and make even more profit from you?
Maybe I am old and Jaded, but it does seem like a pointless exercise to me.
