Charity Rides - Insurance

Perhaps a timely, if unwelcome, reminder to check with your insurers when undertaking any kind of ride involving taking passengers for a ride. North Devon Harley Riders have done many of these over the years and passengers have been happy to make donations to our nominated charities (Devon Air Ambulance & North Devon Hospice).
However a check with our various insurers highlighted that this practice is regarded as 'hire or reward' and is specifically excluded from most policies so you might be riding uninsured - a big risk. Even when donations are made direct to the charity our insurers still won't accept the risk and we've not been able to find anyone to take it on.
Sorry to put a 'damper' on your good deeds but be aware of the risk.

Re: Charity Rides - Insurance

Good point but if a free ride get this signed: H-D Ride Indemnity.pdf

Once it's all over with no scrapes then maybe a donation to said charity...

Because if you have got that signed and your doing it for free you are insured and with your arse covered I reckon?????

Re: Charity Rides - Insurance

Good thinkin Baza - but I think insurers are one step ahead of us. If you get an imdemnity signed to mitigate a known risk it probably ain't worth the paper it's written on.
It seems, as ever, the insurers will do whatever they can to get out of actually providing insurance.

Re: Charity Rides - Insurance

If you take a passenger for a ride for no money it is not for hire or reward.

If they sign the form they cannot sue the arse off you if everything you do is in yours and theirs best interests and you are riding sensible.

Once done and no hassles let them if they want donate to any charity that they like after you have given them a hint.

Anyway senior you have been on the site for 3 1/2 years and only ever made the 2 posts tonight.

Where you been who are you?

I suspect that hire or reward doesn't just cover money - but on the subject of insurance generally you might want to check you are covered for pillions, HD insurance once asked me it would be taking pillions and if so had they been trained (not if I had been trained to ride with them but whether they had been on a specific course) !!!!???!!!

Re: Charity Rides - Insurance

there must be an insurance broker in the club?
this problem has spoilt a lot of fun for us and the peps wanting to have a
ride, is there anybody out there in the legal profession that might put some
light on this grey area.
