Salt down = Bike in hibernation

Well I don`t know about the more seasoned rider`s in the region but that`s it for me until next year. Up here the Council have gritted/salted the roads for the last two nights.

A newbie softie in Stoke

Cover your bike in ACF50 and continue riding.

Re: Salt down = Bike in hibernation

wash it when you get from riding - dynamet licks his bike to check he's got all the salt off, I think that's a bit extreme. Weather's rarely that bad these days thru the winter, if fact this year it would be hard for it to be worse that the summer.

Give it a bloody good clean first then as Phil says cover it in ACF50. Clean it off in the spring.

Re: Salt down = Bike in hibernation

First salt down last night so that's it for the Road King, tax off last night, V14 filled in this morning and send it back to the DVLA for a refund.

Apply for a vehicle licence refund (form V14) : Directgov - Do it online

I don't need to ride it in the salt, it only needs to be left on or a bit not covered properly and that's good bye to the plating especially on alloy and there’s a lot of that on a RKC, so away it goes.

The Sportster I do keep taxed {It has very little chrome and I used ACF50 on it last year and the Scot Oilier 95something or other the year before} but that said last week has been quite cold and in the minus centigrade’s. I can tell you it aint much fun riding in that.
So I might well and do stop riding that too but if I do use it it's washed at the end of the week and more AFC50 applied.

So don’t feel you have to keep riding just to be a real biker, do what you feel best for your situation, there’s a lot of us 'don’t use them in the salt' guys out there.

Plus I like to think it Pisses HM Gov off by them having to give me a refund on my tax, now that does makes me feel better!

Steve

That's how check when I am not sure when the roads have been salted or not, been doing all this week so far..........

Well what I do, just to make it clear, is rub my finger on the bike then lick that, no I don't actualy lick the bike!

Re: Salt down = Bike in hibernation

I spray my bike with acf 50,before winter, each to their own but I ride my heritage when ever i can though winter,if its a dry sunny day im out,I wrap up warm plenty of thin layers, I love it sorted.
I have found rusty bits on my wheels, mirrors on my heritage though the summer(crap harley chroming)so all I do is send them away to be rechromed properly as I find them. the way I see it we don,t get enough nice weather in this country for some of us to enjoy to enjoy riding our harleys personally I can,t see the point in having a bike stored for 5 months of the year its a waste to me.
I visit my local dealership quite often and over the last twelve months their have been many seconed hand bikes in there for sale, some less than 1-2 years old, reason because owners have passed away so given the fact that most harley riders don,t get their dream bike, till later in life it don,t give most of us much time to enjoy riding them...sorry to be so grim...but thats reality.

cheers

pippin

Hi Pippin, given your last comments may be we should be spraying ourselves as well as the bikes, may be we would last longer too

Seriously though, a big thank you to everyone for their comments and advice.

Re: Salt down = Bike in hibernation

Just a comment on the 'ride it and clean it' way of staying active during the winter.

Did I read a similar thread last year, and someone posted that you should never use hot soapy water on your bike after a ride. This because an interaction occurs between salt and hot water, making a brew that is more corrosive. Always wash with cold water only.

I know I read it somewhere
