TC88 Touring Tool Kit ; Rear Axle Sizes and spanners

The only Touring model H-D that comes with a Tool Kit is the Ultra, you can buy this Kit form H-D at a rather expensive £95 or so.

No big deal make up a kit, the problem being that the late '02 on tourers use a larger rear axel with a wheel nut requiring a 36mm {and yes it is metric} or about 1 3/8 inch spanner.

You need an 'F’in big spanner to fit that and it would be rather heavy, especially an adjustable, for a carry round tool kit.

So I got to thinking can you just get the double ring spanner in the Ultra tool kit, answer No.

Good job too as I have found out that it does not fit the rear axel anyway!

I've been on the look out for a tool kit on ebay, they do come up quite often.

There is a '06 Ultra tool kit for sale on ebay and the guy has answered that exact question regarding the rear axel nut.

The size of that flat spanner is 15/16 inch {24mm} and 3/4 inch {19mm} so will not fit the late rear axel.

Back to the drawing board!

Now to remove/replace the rear wheel or adjust the belt properly you need to torque up that wheel nut, well to do this you have to remove the exhaust to get a socket on it, a pain for belt adjustment!

Help is on hand though Kastar make a ratchet wrench for this purpose that you can use with a torque wrench on, but alas still a bit big and bulky to really want to carry about.

Kastar

They are sold through Drag specs and CCI but can be got from here for far less.

Part No. 9636
Wrench, nut ratchet, rear axle, 36mm
Rear Axle 36 mm Nut Ratchet Wrench
The wrench is used to install and remove the rear axle nut on Harley-Davidson motorcycles FL Touring models with 36 mm axle nuts.
• The wrench consists of an extra long ratcheting box wrench with a black vinyl grip and a 1/2 inch square drive for a torque wrench.
• A custom 36 mm double hexagon Flank Drive wheel allows access to reach the application with out the removal of exhaust.
• Loosening and tightening of this nut is a necessary procedure when tightening a drive belt or changing a rear tire.
• Low profile wheel allows access to rear axle nut without removal of the exhaust.
• Ratcheting action seeds installation and removal.
• 1/2 inch square drive allows a torque wrench to be used when tightening.
• The vinyl drip provides a comfortable ergonomic grip and prevents the wrench from scratching or marring the bike.

That's just the point, being you get or can buy a tool kit that you can not even adjust the rear belt with!

Most owners will not have anything that is capable of undoing a nut with an across the flats of 36mm let alone carry one!

Re: - Torx bits they are there, they are included in the Snap on screw driver which does have the Snap on lifetime guarantee.

Re: TC88 Touring Tool Kit

damn good tip.

what I have done with the rear axle nut spanner on my 85 FXEF is carry a *big* ring spanner in my tool roll.

How does it fit?

Easy. Just removed the useless open-end - it's now half the spanner it was...literally! ;D . Apply grinder. Tools can be customised too!

Re: TC88 Touring Tool Kit

Did just that with my adjustable that fitted the FXR rear wheel nut, cut the end off so it fitted nicely in the tool rool, not the adjustable end that is! ;)

But alas this trusty old spanner comes no where near to fitting that 36mm bugger!

Re: TC88 Touring Tool Kit

Bit of an update Re:- The adjustable spanner option.

Found this today. 8)
WWWMotorcycle Tool net
Thin Nose Type Special Wrench

"This is a “must have” tool for your tool pouch! It is only 8-1/4 inches long, light weight and strong. The jaws open large enough to handle any Harley axle nut, a full 1-1/2 inch. It is 1/4 inch thinner than a standard adjustable wrench This wrench has a thickness of 1/2 inch; allowing you to take the rear tire off your scoot without removing the mufflers on an FL touring model. It has a very comfortable rubber grip with a hole in the end of the handle so you can hang it on the wall or attach a lanyard. Best of all it adjusts tight on the nut and the jaws will not flex when you reef on it. There is a metric scale on one side and an SAE scale on the other just in case you want to know the size of the nut. Do not loan this wrench to a friend, you might not get it back!"

The nearest I found here in the UK was Bahco 9031 Adjustable Wrench 8in @ Tooled Up.Com
{not too far from me neither!}

"Bahco 9031 Adjustable Wrench 8In

An adjustable wrench with ergonomic grip for user comfort. The Knurl is deeply grooved to facilitate adjustment.

It has a thin and smooth shank, with thin jaws to give good access.

Jaws angled at 15º to provide maximum access in confined spaces.

Jaw width: 38mm
Length: 8in"

The Bahco does look more chunky though, shame the US narrow one has no make on it! :

Wink Re: TC88 Touring Tool Kit ; Rear Axle Sizes and spanners

Both the adjustables SJC69 identified are currently available on Ebay, for around £16-£20 posted. The Bahco is available from several sources, the nicer looking one is marketed as a 'Faithful'. There is also a cheaper one available, for the impecunious!

Just search for "38mm Adjustable Wrench" to find them all.

There is also a "36mm Single Open End Spanner" in black, also available from several sources, for around £12 posted.

As with all Ebay items, check the cost including postage, because the listed price is not always the cheapest all in.

Added later:

While the adjustables mentioned are around 200mm/8 inches long, the black spanner is almost 300mm/11 3/4 inches long, so not as toolkit-friendly.
